| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that the |
3 |
| News-Progress will celebrate its 25th year of publishing in |
4 |
| 2006; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, The News-Progress came into its current |
6 |
| incarnation in 1981, but its origins go back as far as |
7 |
| September 12, 1857, with the establishment of the Sullivan |
8 |
| Express under the direction of Editor and Publisher, James D. |
9 |
| Moudy, becoming the first newspaper published within the |
10 |
| borders of Moultrie County; the Sullivan Express would give way |
11 |
| to the Sullivan Democrat and eventually to the Sullivan |
12 |
| Progress; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, The Moultrie County News began in 1884 by J. H. |
14 |
| Dunscomb under the name the Sullivan News; Bob and Marion Best |
15 |
| purchased the Moultrie County News in October 1961; the Bests |
16 |
| purchased the Bethany Echo and the Findlay Enterprise in 1973, |
17 |
| and then added the Sullivan Progress and Lovington Reporter in |
18 |
| 1979; and
|
19 |
| WHEREAS, These newspapers were combined in 1981 into the |
20 |
| twice weekly News-Progress and became the only newspaper |
21 |
| published within Moultrie County; in January 1996, the |
22 |
| News-Progress returned to its current format of once-a-week |
23 |
| publication; and
|
24 |
| WHEREAS, The News-Progress and its predecessors have |
25 |
| earned more than 175 awards from its peers in national, state, |
26 |
| and regional contests over the past 37 years; therefore, be it
|
27 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
28 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
29 |
| we recognize the 25th anniversary of the founding of the |
30 |
| News-Progress and the 149 year history that brought about this |
