HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The Yuchi (Tsoyaha) are a tribe of Native
3 Americans who hunted, fished, and farmed much of the land from
4 Florida to Illinois prior to the influx of the Muskhogean,
5 Iroquoian, and Algonkian Peoples and now primarily live in the
6 northeastern part of Oklahoma; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Tsoyaha, their own name for themselves, means
8 "Children of the Sun", and the tribe, also called Yuchi, are,
9 along with Muskogee Creeks, the early ancestors of the Seminole
10 Tribes; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The Yuchi once resided within southeastern
12 Illinois in the vicinity of the Skillett Fork, Embarras, and
13 Little Wabash Rivers and are directly involved in the Mound
14 Building culture, which flourished throughout Illinois and
15 neighboring states; and
 
16     WHEREAS, The Yuchi population plummeted in the 18th century
17 due to foreign diseases and war with the Cherokee, and it is
18 currently estimated that there are approximately 3,000 Yuchi
19 people left; therefore, be it
 
20     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
21 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
22 we recognize and commend the people of the Yuchi; and be it
23 further
 
24     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
25 presented to the People of the Yuchi Tribe as an expression of
26 our esteem.
