HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the 
3
State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Jack Hicks on the 
4
occasion of his retirement after 34 years of service to the 
5
Deerfield Public Library; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Mr. Hicks was appointed Library Director 18 years 
7
ago; prior to that he served as head of the Reference 
8
Department; and

 
9
    WHEREAS, During his tenure with the library, the collection 
10
of books has grown from 30,000 to 185,000; throughout the 
11
years, he led the remodeling, renovating, and growth of the 
12
library through changes in both technology and physical space; 
13
in addition to repairing the building and the computers, and 
14
constructing a puppet theater, writing its scripts,  and 
15
performing, Mr. Hicks provided the first online information 
16
retrieval system in the north suburban area and instructed 
17
other communities in its use; and

 
18
    WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the library was voted 
19
"Business of the Year" by the Chamber of Commerce and has also 
20
won awards for July 4th Family Day; he is loved by staff and 
21
patrons because he is extremely genuine, personable, and a very 
22
concerned and giving person; and

 
23
    WHEREAS, He is a true renaissance man and does many things 
24
well, including woodworking and writing, and he has a love of 
25
books and literature; he has written numerous library articles 
26
and speeches and serves on the Center for the Book and the 
27
Illinois State Library Advisory Committee as well as many other 
28
library committees; and

 
29
    WHEREAS, Mr. Hicks grew up in rural Minnesota; he graduated 
30
from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, with a

bachelor's degree in art and history; he also holds a master's 
2
degree in library science from Rosary College in River Forest; 
3
and
 
4
    WHEREAS, He has lived in Deerfield since 1972; he met and 
5
married his wife Donna after serving in the U.S. Army; she is a 
6
librarian at Northbrook Library; they have two grown daughters, 
7
Maren, who also has a library degree, and Sarah; therefore, be 
8
it

    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
10
NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
11
we congratulate Jack Hicks on the occasion of his retirement 
12
after 34 years at the Deerfield Public Library; and be it 
13
further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
15
presented to him as an expression of our deep respect and 
16
esteem and with best wishes for a relaxing retirement.
