| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The General Assembly of the State of Illinois has |
3 |
| a long history of caring for the welfare of children, those who |
4 |
| have no one to care for them; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, In 1863, the General Assembly incorporated the |
6 |
| Springfield Home for the Friendless to aid orphan children and |
7 |
| widows left homeless by the Civil War; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, There were 52 children that died in January of |
9 |
| 1865 and are buried together at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Block 4, at |
10 |
| an inadequately mark burial site; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, The Home for the Friendless Renovation Project is |
12 |
| working to erect a limestone wall depicting the names of the |
13 |
| children as an appropriate memorial; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, A reception to raise funds for the completion of |
15 |
| the project will be held at the Pasfield House in Springfield, |
16 |
| the former residence of George Pasfield Jr.; Mr. Pasfield |
17 |
| served as the Home's Vice President and was part of a family |
18 |
| tradition that dated back to his grandfather, who was listed in |
19 |
| the original Illinois legislation adopted on February 12, 1863, |
20 |
| which created the Home for the Friendless; George Pasfield's |
21 |
| father, Dr. Pasfield, also served the Home in various Vice |
22 |
| President positions and for over 10 years as President, and his |
23 |
| wife served as a senior member of the Lady Board of Managers; |
24 |
| and
|
25 |
| WHEREAS, Today, the successor of the Home for the |
26 |
| Friendless, the Family Service Center of Sangamon County, |
27 |
| continues to serve the community in related ways and was |
28 |
| recognized with an Illinois State Historical Society |
29 |
| Centennial Award in 2001 and by the City of Springfield for |
30 |
| continuously serving the community in its current role; |
