HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Fredric Bente Selcke, former Clerk of the House of Representatives, on Saturday, April 1, 2006; and

WHEREAS, He was born on October 27, 1914, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Rev. Benno H. and Frieda Bente Selcke; he married the former Helen E. Culver of Indian Point on September 19, 1942; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Selcke was educated in the Petersburg public schools and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston in 1939 with a degree in business administration; and

WHEREAS, He valiantly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army; he enlisted in 1942 and was discharged as a captain in 1946; he served in the Philippines and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; he was also a 60-year member of American Legion Post 198 and a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Petersburg; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Selcke was active in Republican politics both locally and statewide; he was a precinct committeeman for many years and served as Republican County Chairman of Menard County for eight years; he was elected Menard County Clerk in 1946 and 1950; in February of 1953 he was appointed by then Governor William G. Stratton as Superintendent of Registration for the Illinois Department of Registration and Education; and

WHEREAS, In 1963, Mr. Selcke was elected Chief Clerk of the Illinois House of Representatives and served ten years in that capacity along with two years as Assistant Chief Clerk; in 1973, as Chief Clerk, he was elected President of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries; he retired from state service in December of 1976; from 1977 to 1997, he worked as a legislative consultant for several elected officials and business organizations; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Fred Selcke has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife of 63 years, Helen; his children, Sandra S. (husband, Dr. Patrick) Bernardi and Stephen F. (wife, Katherine) Selcke; his grandchildren, Ellye and Greg Bernardi, and Ben, Dan, and Drew Selcke; his brother, Dr. Benno H. Selcke, Jr.; his sister, Phyllis S. Weaver; his sister-in-law, Harriett C. Shaw; and his nieces, Sally Moreno, Jane Cutright, and Brigitte Tournier; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Fredric Bente Selcke, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our sincerest condolences.
