HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives were
3 deeply saddened to learn of the death of John Lee Johnson of
4 Champaign on March 23, 2006; and
 
5     WHEREAS, John Lee Johnson was born Aug. 7, 1941, in
6 Champaign, the son of Thomas and Mamie Carr Johnson; he was
7 preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two
8 sisters; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was known as an uncompromising civil
10 rights activist who fought for social justice his entire adult
11 life; he was instrumental in the construction of the Martin
12 Luther King subdivision in Champaign and the Eads Street
13 subdivision in Urbana; he was a leader on fair housing,
14 affordable housing, and providing health care to the poor; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson was a member of the Champaign City
16 Council from 1973 to 1981, and he never stopped attending
17 council meetings; he ran for City of Champaign Township
18 supervisor, for the Champaign school board, and for the
19 Parkland College board of trustees; he served on the Busey Bank
20 Community Reinvestment Act Advisory Board; he was involved in
21 Champaign County Health Care Consumers for many years; and
 
22     WHEREAS, Mr. Johnson received many awards for civic
23 involvement, from groups ranging from Citizens Action to the
24 Champaign-Urbana Ministerial Alliance; in 1999, Mr. Johnson
25 received the Outstanding Community Service Award from the
26 National Council of African American Men and the Champaign
27 County Chamber of Commerce; in 2003, the ministerial alliance
28 saluted him for 40 years of activism against bigotry and
29 prejudice and for removing barriers to achieving the American
30 dream; he was slated to receive the Champaign County Health
31 Care Consumers lifetime achievement award this year; and

1     WHEREAS, The passing of John Lee Johnson is felt by all who
2 knew him, especially his son, John Ore Johnson; his brothers,
3 Louis H. Johnson, Thomas Johnson, Larry Johnson, and William
4 Johnson; his sisters, Gertrude Palmer, Ann Marie Johnson,
5 Fannie Chalk, and Carolyn Johnson; and his longtime girlfriend,
6 Ruby Taylor; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9 we mourn the death of John Lee Johnson, and we extend our
10 sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and community;
11 and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to the family of John Lee Johnson as an expression of
14 our deepest sympathy.
