| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Deidre Downs, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, was |
3 |
| crowned Miss America in 2005; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, As Miss America, Ms. Downs embarked on a national |
5 |
| speaking tour to promote her platform of Curing Childhood |
6 |
| Cancer and has won numerous awards for her community service |
7 |
| platform, including being named national spokesperson for the |
8 |
| Cure Search childhood cancer foundation; she is a Rhodes |
9 |
| Scholar finalist, a magna cum laude graduate of Samford |
10 |
| University, and an Echols Scholar at the University of |
11 |
| Virginia; and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, She received the 2005 Public Service Award from |
13 |
| the American Association of Cancer Research, President Bush's |
14 |
| Daily Point of Light Award for community service, and the |
15 |
| Quality of Life Award from the Miss America Organization |
16 |
| recognizing the contestant with the greatest accomplishments |
17 |
| in her community service platform; she is the creator of the |
18 |
| Curing Childhood Cancer license plate, an official Alabama |
19 |
| specialty car tag that has raised over $95,000 for pediatric |
20 |
| cancer research; and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Downs is a member of the Jobs for America's |
22 |
| Graduates Board of Directors, the national organization that |
23 |
| Jobs for Illinois Graduates (JILG) is affiliated with; she is |
24 |
| appearing in Springfield as a showing of strong support for the |
25 |
| outstanding work of JILG on behalf of Illinois' young people; |
26 |
| and
|
27 |
| WHEREAS, JILG has shown exemplary performance in the high |
28 |
| schools they serve throughout the State, serving students in |
29 |
| high school and fostering their future success after |
30 |
| graduation; therefore, be it
