| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, A Chicago landmark recently closed its doors after |
3 |
| 107 years of service to the citizens and visitors of our great |
4 |
| State; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, The Berghoff Restaurant, opened in 1898 by Herman |
6 |
| Joseph Berghoff as Berghoff Cafe, closed for the final time on |
7 |
| Tuesday, February 28, 2006; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, The restaurant has been owned and operated by |
9 |
| three generations of Berghoffs, most recently by Jan and Herman |
10 |
| Berghoff and their family; it was initially opened to showcase |
11 |
| Herman Berghoff's celebrated Dortmunder-style beer; originally |
12 |
| located at the corner of State and Adams streets, one door down |
13 |
| from its present location, the bar sold beer for a nickel and |
14 |
| offered sandwiches for free; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, The restaurant itself was a connection to years |
16 |
| gone-by; the large dining rooms were paneled in wood and |
17 |
| covered with pictures of Chicago's past; a display case held |
18 |
| "liquor license Number One", granted to Herman Berghoff because |
19 |
| he was the first person waiting in the line on the day |
20 |
| Prohibition was repealed; and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, While the menu would change regularly, the |
22 |
| restaurant was famous for its delicious German food, including |
23 |
| sauerbraten, wienerschnitzel, creamed spinach, and freshly |
24 |
| baked apple strudel, as well as its beer; several generations |
25 |
| of Illinoisans have enjoyed the tradition of Berghoffs; |
26 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
28 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
29 |
| we recognize the many years of contributions made by the |
30 |
| Berghoff Restaurant in Chicago; and be it further
