| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|
2 |
| WHEREAS, In response to a series of violent acts in |
3 |
| Springfield, the Reverend Lee Fields, Jr., senior pastor of |
4 |
| Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Springfield, organized a "Stop |
5 |
| the Violence" march, held on February 6, 2006; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Hope and faith were the overall messages of the |
7 |
| march, and the need for each citizen to take responsibility for |
8 |
| stopping the violence in their own home was highlighted; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, The event included speeches from students, |
10 |
| clergy, State lawmakers, and community leaders; the mayor, |
11 |
| police chief, aldermen, and other city and State officials also |
12 |
| attended; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, Participants gathered in more than 200 vehicles at |
14 |
| Southeast High School then drove together to Fourth Street and |
15 |
| Capitol Avenue to walk to the east steps of the Capitol for a |
16 |
| prayer and candlelight vigil; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, Reverend Fields talked about people taking charge |
18 |
| of their own children and the importance of teaching |
19 |
| self-respect and not blaming the problems of youth on their |
20 |
| schools; therefore, be it
|
21 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
22 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
23 |
| we thank Reverend Lee Fields, Jr., for his community leadership |
24 |
| in heightening public awareness to the growing violence in his |
25 |
| community by organizing a "Stop the Violence" march; and be it |
26 |
| further
|

| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
28 |
| presented to Reverend Fields as an expression of our gratitude |
29 |
| for his involvement in the community.
