| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives are pleased to recognize milestone events in | ||||||
4 | the lives of the citizens of the State of Illinois; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Agnes Dale (Manning) Smith was born on April 2, | ||||||
6 | 1906, in Willow Hill to Elisha and Mary E. (Crail) Manning; | ||||||
7 | after her mother died when she was 8, she joined the household | ||||||
8 | of foster parents, Paul B. and Emily Harper; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, On October 16, 1930, she married Victor L. Smith | ||||||
10 | and together they had a daughter, Emily Carol; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith graduated from Robinson High School as | ||||||
12 | part of the class of 1925; she ranked third in her class out of | ||||||
13 | 72 students; she was vice president of her senior class and on | ||||||
14 | the staff of News 'N' Everything, the student newspaper; and | ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, In 1967, she graduated from Vincennes University | ||||||
16 | with an Associate in Science degree; she later went to Eastern | ||||||
17 | Illinois University, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts | ||||||
18 | degree in 1984; she also studied at Trinity College in Dublin, | ||||||
19 | Ireland, in 1969; at American University in Washington, D.C., | ||||||
20 | and at 4 other Midwestern locations, including Lincoln Trail | ||||||
21 | College in Robinson; and

22 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith began her career at Argus Printing | ||||||
23 | House, which was founded by Paul Harper's father, George W.; | ||||||
24 | she joined the office following high school as a bookkeeper and | ||||||
25 | society editor; in 1945, she and her husband became co-owners | ||||||
26 | of the Argus Printing House, upon the retirement of Paul | ||||||
27 | Harper; the Smiths retired in 1986, when their daughter and | ||||||
28 | son-in-law took over operations of the paper; and
| ||||||
29 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith has been very active in her community; |

| |||||||
1 | she has been a member of many organizations including the | ||||||
2 | Robinson Woman's Club; Robinson Minerva Club; Crawford County | ||||||
3 | Republican Women; Pre-School Mothers Club in 1935; Delta Theta | ||||||
4 | Tau Sorority; James Halstead, Sr., Chapter NSDAR; and Chapter | ||||||
5 | I.G.P.E.O.; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, She has been given many awards for her service, | ||||||
7 | including Good Citizenship, Dale Carnegie Crawford County | ||||||
8 | Alumni; Distinguished Citizen for 1987, Robinson Chamber of | ||||||
9 | Commerce; and the Robinson High School Alumni of the Year 2003; | ||||||
10 | in addition, she has been honored by the Pre-School Mothers on | ||||||
11 | the 55th anniversary, 1991, and the RHS Alumni Association; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Smith has had some very unique and | ||||||
13 | interesting experiences in her life; while in Ireland, she was | ||||||
14 | able to take a side trip to Wales to witness the investiture of | ||||||
15 | Prince Charles, heir to the British throne; accompanied by her | ||||||
16 | husband, who was the State chairman for 13 years, she attended | ||||||
17 | four Republican National Conventions; she was appointed as the | ||||||
18 | Volunteer Service Director by Mayor Crebs during World War II | ||||||
19 | and was called to Chicago 3 times to attend conferences; she | ||||||
20 | was the delegate at the 1930 Delta Theta Tau philanthropic | ||||||
21 | sorority convention, where she was elected national vice | ||||||
22 | president; and she served 2 years as the Division VI Director | ||||||
23 | for the Illinois Daughters of the Revolution; therefore, be it
| ||||||
24 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
25 | NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
26 | we congratulate Agnes Dale Smith on the occasion of her 100th | ||||||
27 | birthday and wish her many more happy years; and be it further
| ||||||
28 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
29 | presented to Agnes Dale Smith as an expression of our esteem | ||||||
30 | and with our heartfelt best wishes.
