HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The United States was founded by immigrants who
3 traveled from around the world seeking a better life; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The United States has an undocumented population
5 of eleven million immigrants, including half a million in
6 Illinois; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Immigrants in Illinois fill key roles in the
8 State's economy by paying taxes, including contributions to
9 Social Security that they cannot receive back, raising
10 families, and contributing to Illinois schools, churches,
11 neighborhoods, and communities; and
 
12     WHEREAS, The current immigration system contributes to
13 long backlogs, labor abuses, countless deaths on the border,
14 and vigilante violence and is in dire need of reform to meet
15 the challenges of the 21st Century; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Comprehensive immigration reform must involve a
17 path to citizenship for these hard-working immigrants, as well
18 as reunification of families and a safe and orderly process for
19 enabling willing immigrant workers to fill essential jobs in
20 the economy and to ensure full labor rights; and
 
21     WHEREAS, The Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act of
22 2005 severely punishes illegal employment practices while
23 creating a path to earned permanent legal status for
24 individuals who have been working in the United States, paying
25 taxes, obeying the law, and learning English and protects
26 workers by ensuring the right to change jobs, join a union, and
27 report abusive employment situations; and
 
28     WHEREAS, Modernizing the antiquated and dysfunctional
29 immigration system will uphold our nation's basic values of

1 fairness, equal opportunity, and respect for the law;
2 therefore, be it
 
3     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5 we support comprehensive immigration reform and urge the
6 passage by the United States Congress of the Secure America and
7 Orderly Immigration Act of 2005, which allows every
8 hard-working, law-abiding individual to achieve the American
9 dream; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
11 forwarded to the President of the United States, the Speaker of
12 the United States House of Representatives, the President pro
13 tempore of the United States Senate, and to each member of the
14 Illinois Congressional delegation.
