| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The importance of the Great Lakes to both the |
3 |
| United States and Canada cannot be emphasized strongly enough; |
4 |
| and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, The Great Lakes collectively are the largest |
6 |
| bodies of fresh water in the world, constituting one-fifth of |
7 |
| the Earth's supply of fresh water; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, It is vital for the economic and ecological |
9 |
| survival of the Great Lakes region that the environmental |
10 |
| integrity of the Great Lakes basin be protected; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, The Great Lakes drainage basin, which covers a |
12 |
| 288,000 square-mile area, provides an enormous economic |
13 |
| benefit, such as a $35 billion-a-year boating industry and an |
14 |
| $18 billion-a-year wildlife watching and sportsman industry, |
15 |
| to the region; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, The Great Lakes Regional Collaboration Strategy |
17 |
| is the result of an enormous bipartisan effort that includes |
18 |
| several states, cities, tribes, and Canadian provinces, as well |
19 |
| as a coalition of environmental advocates, businesses, and |
20 |
| other concerned parties; therefore, be it
|
21 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
22 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
23 |
| we urge the United States Congress and the President to support |
24 |
| legislation that implements key recommendations of the Great |
25 |
| Lakes Regional Collaboration Strategy, including $300 million |
26 |
| dollars in federal FY 2007 funds called for by Great Lakes |
27 |
| governors and mayors, to be used for sewer and water |
28 |
| improvements, wetlands and river restoration, toxic cleanups, |
29 |
| and other vital projects; and be it further
