HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives learned with sadness of the death of Rubertha "Bert" Rivers on August 27, 2005; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Rivers was the second oldest of six daughters reared by Henry and Lovie Lewis; she and her family left Terry, Mississippi, in 1920 to come to Chicago; and

WHEREAS, She married Morris Rivers on November 25, 1938, and they had two daughters; and

WHEREAS, She became a lifelong member of Christ Temple Cathedral on Chicago's South Side; over the years, she was a member of W.A.C.C.'s, the Cathedral Choir, and Pastor's Aide; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Rivers was very proud of her unique talent as a millinery artist; church services and special events were perfect venues for her to wear her latest hat creations; she also enjoyed admiring the beauty of birds and the creativity that poetry embraced; and

WHEREAS, Her family, friends, and many others appreciated her beautiful smile, love for life, and encouraging words of support; and

WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris; her daughter, Sharon; and her sisters, Christine, Gladys, and Marcelene; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Rubertha Rivers is felt by all who knew and loved her, especially her sisters, Margaret Brown and Geraldine Byrd; her daughter, Chandra Walls (Charles); her grandson, Charles Walls; her nephews, William Hester, Tracy Byrd, and Jamal Byrd; her nieces, Chandra Clark, Chandra Hester, and Latasha Jennings; and a host of very special nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Rubertha "Bert" Rivers and extend our sincerest condolences to her family, friends, and community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to her family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
