| WHEREAS, 2005 marks the 25th year that Project Education |
3 |
| Plus (PEP) has been serving the young people, disadvantaged |
4 |
| families, children, and senior citizens of the Cabrini-Green |
5 |
| Near North area; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1980, the purpose of PEP |
7 |
| has been to divert the anger, frustration, and negative |
8 |
| attitudes of youth of the Cabrini-Green Near North area into |
9 |
| positive learning experiences and constructive activities; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, It's mission is to enlighten youth on how to take |
11 |
| advantage of the educational, technological, and recreational |
12 |
| outlets in society and transfer that knowledge into a |
13 |
| successful self-sufficient life; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Through the Louise Rhine Seniors Program, PEP has |
15 |
| branched out to meet the needs of senior citizens residing in |
16 |
| Cabrini-Green housing and in the surrounding Near North area; |
17 |
| the purpose of this program is to give seniors a socializing |
18 |
| base and some activities to do, rather than being shut in; the |
19 |
| seniors meet to plan activities, field trips, fundraisers, and |
20 |
| social events; during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, |
21 |
| seniors are treated to dinner and baskets of holiday items for |
22 |
| their families; these activities also serve as an |
23 |
| intergenerational component of PEP; and
|
24 |
| WHEREAS, Another component of PEP is the SMART Program, |
25 |
| which is designed to provide academic enrichment to youth, |
26 |
| teens, and adults in the community, and includes an |
27 |
| after-school program, a technology program, a summer math and |
28 |
| science camp, a high school and college mentoring program, and |
29 |
| a recreational program; and
|
