| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, On May 28, 2005, street signs will be placed in |
3 |
| John W. Waddy's honor on 33rd and 35th Streets in Chicago; they |
4 |
| will read "John W. Waddy Avenue"; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Waddy currently resides on South Giles Avenue |
6 |
| and is one of the oldest residents in the 2nd Ward; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, He was born January 2, 1910, in Paris, Tennessee, |
8 |
| and moved to Chicago to his present address at the age of six |
9 |
| with his mother and four brothers; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, He and his four brothers graduated from Stephen A. |
11 |
| Douglas Elementary School and Wendell Phillips High School; he |
12 |
| married Pocahontas Dawkins on June 18, 1929, and they had seven |
13 |
| children; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, On April 17, 1944, he was drafted into the U.S. |
15 |
| Navy and served his country as a Petty Officer, Third Class; he |
16 |
| was honorably discharged on October 30, 1947; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, He worked as a butcher at Harry's Grocery and |
18 |
| Market on 35th Street until he retired in the early 1960s; |
19 |
| therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
21 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
22 |
| we congratulate John W. Waddy on this achievement, his |
23 |
| commitment to his family, workforce, and country, and for |
24 |
| dedicating his entire life to community service, since 1919, to |
25 |
| the Gap-Bronzeville area; and be it further
|
26 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
27 |
| presented to John W. Waddy as an expression of our admiration |
28 |
| and esteem.
