HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, It is with deep concern for the hundreds of
3 thousands of citizens nationwide who face increasing
4 difficulties feeding their families that this body joins with
5 the Illinois Interagency Nutrition Council, the Illinois Food
6 Bank Association, and its individual Food Bank members as they
7 support America's Second Harvest's National Hunger Awareness
8 campaign to provide food assistance to hungry children; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Because of the sharp downturn in the economy,
10 numerous families on a daily basis are relying on food banks to
11 secure food for their families; and
 
12     WHEREAS, In Illinois, nine food banks provide food
13 assistance to needy families and their children with a variety
14 of feeding programs, including Kid's Cafes, Summertime Lunch
15 Bag, and After School Snack programs throughout the year that
16 are all designed to reduce childhood hunger; and
 
17     WHEREAS, America's Second Harvest, the largest
18 hunger-relief organization in the United States, has seen an
19 increase in the demand for food, particularly among families
20 with children, and it has launched a national campaign to
21 secure additional resources to help ease child hunger; and
 
22     WHEREAS, The date of June 7, 2005, has been designated
23 "National Hunger Awareness Day" and the Illinois Food Bank
24 Association members: the Central Illinois Food Bank in
25 Springfield; the Eastern Illinois Food Bank in Urbana; the
26 Greater Chicago Food Depository in Chicago; the Hunger
27 Connection Food Bank in Rockford; the Northern Illinois Food
28 Bank in St. Charles; the Peoria Area Food Bank in Peoria; the
29 River Bend Food Bank in Moline; the St. Louis Food Bank in St.
30 Louis, Missouri; and the Tri-State Food Bank in Evansville,
31 Indiana, in partnership with over 2,000 emergency food

1 providers, have committed their support for America's Second
2 Harvest's national campaign to provide additional resources
3 from our communities to combat child hunger; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The additional attention generated by this
5 National Hunger Awareness Day will benefit the more than one
6 million adults and children who are at or below the poverty
7 level and likely in need of food assistance within Illinois;
8 therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11 we proclaim June 7, 2005, as "National Hunger Awareness Day" in
12 Illinois to help secure additional resources to help end child
13 hunger; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
15 presented to the Illinois Food Bank Association members.
