| ||||||
2 | WHEREAS, The South Suburban Housing Center (SSHC) | ||||||
3 | celebrates its 30th anniversary in April of 2005; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, The SSHC was organized in April of 1975 by several | ||||||
5 | local chapters of the League of Women Voters for the purpose of | ||||||
6 | monitoring and addressing discriminatory practices in the | ||||||
7 | housing markets of the south Chicago metropolitan region; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, The SSHC is the private, non-profit, regional fair | ||||||
9 | housing agency serving over 100 communities in southern Cook, | ||||||
10 | northeastern Will, and Kankakee counties of Illinois; and
| ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, SSHC's mission is to foster stable, racially and | ||||||
12 | economically diverse, communities; governed by an interracial | ||||||
13 | and multi-cultural Board of Directors, SSHC's current Fair | ||||||
14 | Housing Enforcement and Housing Counseling programs assist | ||||||
15 | individuals in all protected classes and ensures that housing | ||||||
16 | providers recognize and comply with the fair housing laws; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, SSHC's housing counseling activities administered | ||||||
18 | by its Homeseekers Service Program provide comprehensive | ||||||
19 | counseling assistance to homebuyers, renters, homeless | ||||||
20 | individuals, and existing homeowners; affirmative, | ||||||
21 | option-expanding approaches to housing and mortgage financing | ||||||
22 | choices are promoted to all clients receiving assistance; | ||||||
23 | additional fair housing and predatory lending legal awareness | ||||||
24 | education is given to each housing counseling client by SSHC's | ||||||
25 | experienced fair housing enforcement staff; these housing | ||||||
26 | counseling activities include pre-purchase, post-purchase | ||||||
27 | rental, and homeless displacement individual sessions, as well | ||||||
28 | as group homeownership workshops and fair housing/predatory | ||||||
29 | lending awareness educational presentations; and
| ||||||
30 | WHEREAS, SSHC's 2004 program accomplishments included |

| |||||||
1 | responding to inquiries from the public about housing | ||||||
2 | availability or housing opportunities; providing intensive | ||||||
3 | one-on-one pre-purchase/mortgage counseling to families; | ||||||
4 | conducting fair housing tests in 64 communities; presenting | ||||||
5 | first-time home buyer seminars in six different locations | ||||||
6 | throughout the south Cook County service area; receiving and | ||||||
7 | processing complaints of housing discrimination from the | ||||||
8 | public; presenting fair housing law training sessions for area | ||||||
9 | landlords, builders, and municipal officials;
providing | ||||||
10 | affirmative rental placement counseling; filing new fair | ||||||
11 | housing act enforcement actions and housing discrimination | ||||||
12 | suits; and resolving fair housing complaint actions; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, SSHC's challenge is to continue to expand the | ||||||
14 | operation of programs that effectively combat the forces that | ||||||
15 | cause segregated housing and that promote inclusive housing | ||||||
16 | markets throughout the region; SSHC works in partnership with a | ||||||
17 | network of other municipal, business, civic, and advocacy | ||||||
18 | groups to address the fair housing issues of the region; in | ||||||
19 | recent years, SSHC has participated in the Housing Task Force | ||||||
20 | organized by U. S. Representative Jesse Jackson, Jr.'s office | ||||||
21 | to implement the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's WOW | ||||||
22 | (With Ownership, Wealth), initiative in Illinois' 2nd | ||||||
23 | Congressional District; and
| ||||||
24 | WHEREAS, SSHC continues to maintain its close working | ||||||
25 | relationships with the collaboration of private fair housing | ||||||
26 | agencies operating in the Chicago area; therefore, be it
| ||||||
27 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
28 | NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | ||||||
29 | we congratulate the South Suburban Housing Center on the | ||||||
30 | occasion of its 30th anniversary and commend its many | ||||||
31 | accomplishments and extend our best wishes for continued | ||||||
32 | success in the years ahead; and be it further
