| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The Joliet Area/South Suburban Alumnae Chapter of |
3 |
| the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has received a Disney |
4 |
| Hand Minnie Grant; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, The Sorority was one of 75 winners chosen from |
6 |
| over 400 applicants from across the nation; the grant is |
7 |
| administered by Youth Service America and funded by Disney, and |
8 |
| is used to underwrite youth service projects for National Youth |
9 |
| Service Day; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, The young ladies who participate in Delta Academy |
11 |
| (middle school) and My D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. (high school) will visit |
12 |
| Jones Memorial Community Center in Chicago Heights on Saturday, |
13 |
| April 16, 2005; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, They will participate in literacy and arts |
15 |
| activities with 150 students from grades Pre-K thru Sixth; the |
16 |
| girls, along with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., members and |
17 |
| other volunteers will read stories to students and will also |
18 |
| help them create their own stories; a parent workshop for |
19 |
| approximately 50 parents will also occur that day; this project |
20 |
| addresses the importance of literacy and the arts for |
21 |
| disadvantaged families in the Chicago Heights community; and
|
22 |
| WHEREAS, The goals of National Youth Service Day are to |
23 |
| mobilize youths as leaders to identify and address the needs of |
24 |
| their communities through service and service-learning, to |
25 |
| support youth on a lifelong path of service and civic |
26 |
| engagement, and to educate the public, the media, and |
27 |
| policymakers about the year-round contributions of young |
28 |
| people as community leaders; therefore, be it
