2 | WHEREAS, Congressman Henry J. Hyde will be retiring from | ||||||
3 | the Untied States Congress at the end of his current term; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, He has honorably served the people of the 6th | ||||||
5 | District since first being elected to Congress in 1975; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, Since 1982 he has served on and is the current | ||||||
7 | chairman of the House International Relations Committee, where | ||||||
8 | he has played a vital role in the nation's war on terrorism and | ||||||
9 | has been involved in crucial debates about international arms | ||||||
10 | control, the War Powers Act, the expansion of NATO, and the | ||||||
11 | congressional investigation of the Iran-Contra affair; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, From 1985 to 1991, Congressman Hyde served as the | ||||||
13 | ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on | ||||||
14 | Intelligence, where he worked to ensure that the nation's | ||||||
15 | intelligence community was adequately funded; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Since 1975, he has served on the House Judiciary | ||||||
17 | Committee, serving as its chairman from 1995 to 2001; and
| ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Congressman Hyde has worked to help his District | ||||||
19 | through public works projects, flood control, clean drinking | ||||||
20 | water, citizenship projects in local school districts, and new | ||||||
21 | housing developments for senior citizens and special needs | ||||||
22 | children; and
| ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, Before serving in the U.S. Congress, he served in | ||||||
24 | the Illinois House of Representatives from 1966 to 1974; during | ||||||
25 | that time he was one of the House's outspoken and articulate | ||||||
26 | debaters, rising to majority leader; and
| ||||||
27 | WHEREAS, He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on November 11, 1942, | ||||||
28 | attended the Navy V-12 Program at Duke University and Notre |

1 | Dame University, was Commissioned as Ensign, USNR, and served | ||||||
2 | in the South Pacific, New Guinea, and in combat in the | ||||||
3 | Philippines; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserves from | ||||||
5 | 1946 to 1968 and retired at the rank of Commander after serving | ||||||
6 | as officer in charge, U.S. Naval Intelligence Reserve Unit in | ||||||
7 | Chicago; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Congressman Hyde graduated in 1947 from | ||||||
9 | Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., with a Bachelor of | ||||||
10 | Science and from Loyola University School of Law, Chicago, in | ||||||
11 | 1949 with a Juris Doctor; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, He was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1950 and | ||||||
13 | entered private practice specializing in litigation; and | ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Congressman Hyde is a past President of the Trial | ||||||
15 | Lawyers Club of Chicago and the past Chairman of the Illinois | ||||||
16 | Crime Investigating Commission; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, He grew up in Chicago as an Irish-Catholic; and | ||||||
18 | WHEREAS, Congressman Hyde was married to Jeanne Simpson | ||||||
19 | Hyde for 45 years until her death in 1992; they have four | ||||||
20 | children and four grandchildren; and | ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, The residents of DuPage County are lucky to have | ||||||
22 | had such a strong leader, expert, and advocate; therefore, be | ||||||
23 | it

24 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
25 | NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE | ||||||
26 | SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we offer our sincere | ||||||
27 | appreciation to the honorable Henry J. Hyde, Congressman of | ||||||
28 | Illinois' 6th District, for his many years of public service; |

2 | RESOLVED, That we salute Congressman Hyde's tireless | ||||||
3 | efforts on behalf of the 6th Congressional District, the State | ||||||
4 | of Illinois, and the entire country;

5 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
6 | presented to Congressman Henry J. Hyde.
