| HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The AIDS epidemic continues to pervade our world, |
3 |
| affecting both men and women of all ages and ethnicities; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, Since the AIDS epidemic first surfaced in the |
5 |
| United States, an estimated 929,985 AIDS cases have been |
6 |
| reported, and approximately 524,000 or 56 percent of those |
7 |
| individuals have lost their lives as a result of the disease; |
8 |
| and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Of those 929,985 reported cases, nearly 30,139 |
10 |
| were from the State of Illinois; in 2003, there were 1,730 |
11 |
| individuals diagnosed with AIDS in Illinois; and |
12 |
| WHEREAS, The city of Chicago accounts for approximately 73 |
13 |
| percent of all reported AIDS cases in Illinois; since 1981, at |
14 |
| least 22,190 persons in Chicago have been diagnosed with AIDS, |
15 |
| and at least 11,931 of those individuals have died; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, The General Assembly of the State of Illinois has |
17 |
| provided increasing funds to raise greater awareness of AIDS, |
18 |
| support cutting-edge research and treatment, and provide |
19 |
| counseling and testing services to the citizens of this State; |
20 |
| and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, The State of Illinois proudly joins the City of |
22 |
| Chicago in the continuing fight against AIDS; on December 1, |
23 |
| 2005, citizens representing coalitions and faith-based |
24 |
| organizations throughout the Chicago area have joined with the |
25 |
| Chicago Department of Public Health to sponsor World AIDS Day |
26 |
| 2005, which is a globally recognized event each year; and
|
27 |
| WHEREAS, World AIDS Day is an opportunity to educate |
28 |
| citizens about AIDS, to pay tribute to the many lives that have |
29 |
| been lost, and to express support for the ongoing efforts to |
