| warning lights, unless the lights can be powered by the |

| battery; and |
13 |
| (6) the bus is running due to a traffic, safety, or |

| emergency situation.

| Sec. 34-18.32. School bus idling policy. |

| (a) The board shall adopt a
policy that prohibits a school |
18 |
| bus that is in operation for the purpose of
transporting |
19 |
| students to or from school or a school-related function or
|
20 |
| activity from running on idle for more than 10 minutes while |
21 |
| the bus is
parked. |
22 |
| The policy shall not apply when the ambient air temperature |
23 |
| is less than 0 degrees fahrenheit. |
24 |
| (b) The policy must require all diesel school buses to be |
25 |
| parked and loaded at least 100 feet from school air-intake |
26 |
| systems unless the school board determines that alternative |
27 |
| locations block traffic, impair student safety, or are not |
28 |
| cost-effective. The policy must also require that, when they |
29 |
| are not in use, all diesel school buses on school property or |
30 |
| near school air-intake systems must be parked in a manner that |
31 |
| reduces contamination of school bus cabins and school |
32 |
| facilities by diesel engine exhaust fumes. The policy must |
33 |
| allow exceptions to these requirements when: |

| Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect September |
