Amends the Local Governmental Employees Political Rights Act. Provides that a member of a fire department or fire protection district may be elected or appointed to public office and may serve in public office. Provides that if the member is not in uniform and not on duty, the member may solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters. Effective immediately.

| AN ACT concerning local government.
|

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 |
| represented in the General Assembly:
|

| Section 5. The Local Governmental Employees Political |
5 |
| Rights Act is amended by adding Section 12 as follows: |
6 |
| (50 ILCS 135/12 new) |
7 |
| Sec. 12. Elective and appointed office. A member of any |
8 |
| fire department or fire protection district may: |
9 |
| (1) be a candidate for elective public office and serve |
10 |
| in that public office if elected; |
11 |
| (2) be appointed to any public office and serve in that |
12 |
| public office if appointed; and |
13 |
| (3) as long as the member is not in uniform and not on |
14 |
| duty, solicit votes and campaign funds and challenge voters |
15 |
| for the public office for which the member is a candidate.

| Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
17 |
| becoming law.
