2 | WHEREAS, Lars Hoffman, a political and civic "prince" who | ||||||
3 | served as the Village of Godfrey's first mayor and taught | ||||||
4 | thousands of students at Lewis and Clark Community College, | ||||||
5 | died on October 23, 2004; and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, He was born December 2, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa | ||||||
7 | to Gene L. and Ruth (Hillis) Hoffman, and married the former | ||||||
8 | Judy G. Callender on May 12, 1984 in Alton; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, He was elected mayor of Godfrey in 1991 and served | ||||||
10 | for two terms; he was a school board member for the Brussels | ||||||
11 | Public School District; he was a state representative candidate | ||||||
12 | in 1978; he was awarded the Citizen of the Year in 2003 by | ||||||
13 | Pride Inc.; and he was a past recipient of the Elijah P. | ||||||
14 | Lovejoy Award; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, He received numerous awards for excellence in | ||||||
16 | teaching during his 35-year teaching career; he was a professor | ||||||
17 | at Lewis and Clark Community College (LCCC) in Godfrey for 30 | ||||||
18 | years, a visiting professor at Principia College, and an | ||||||
19 | adjunct professor at McKendree College; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, He helped implement Model Illinois Government at | ||||||
21 | LCCC, where college students from across the State debate and | ||||||
22 | play out the roles of Illinois Senate and House members; he | ||||||
23 | also produced and hosted a weekly show, "Metro Talk," at LCCC | ||||||
24 | for Charter Cable that informed the community about local | ||||||
25 | issues; and
| ||||||
26 | WHEREAS, He received a bachelor of arts degree from | ||||||
27 | Grinnell College; he attended the School of International | ||||||
28 | Service at American University in Washington, D.C. and later | ||||||
29 | attended the University of Iowa, where he received a master of | ||||||
30 | arts and a Ph.D in American history and political philosophy; |

2 | WHEREAS, He was active in many organizations and projects | ||||||
3 | throughout the community, including the Alton-Godfrey Rotary | ||||||
4 | Club; 100 Black Men of Alton; Alton Museum of History and Art; | ||||||
5 | Growth Association of Southwestern Illinois; and End of Life | ||||||
6 | Coalition and Pride; and he was a member and Sunday school | ||||||
7 | teacher at Sixth Church of Christ Scientist in St. Louis; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his father, Gene L. | ||||||
9 | Hoffman; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, The passing of Lars Hoffman will be felt by all | ||||||
11 | who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Judy; his mother, | ||||||
12 | Ruth Hoffman; his daughter and son-in-law, Alexandra and | ||||||
13 | Charles Gottdiener; his son and daughter-in-law, Shayler and | ||||||
14 | Cara Hoffman; his stepson and his wife, Clayton and Debra | ||||||
15 | Marquis; his stepdaughter and her husband, Stacia and Lee | ||||||
16 | Ebrey; his grandchildren, Benjamin and Sophia Gottdiener, | ||||||
17 | Cecelia and Stockton Hoffman, Jeremy and Matthew Myers, Alyson | ||||||
18 | Ebrey, and Drew and Turner Marquis; his two brothers and | ||||||
19 | sisters-in-law, Lynn and Karen Hoffman and Robert "Buzz" and | ||||||
20 | Sandy Hoffman; and other extended family, colleagues and many | ||||||
21 | friends; therefore, be it

22 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
23 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
24 | Lars Hoffman and extend our sincerest condolences to his | ||||||
25 | family, friends and community; and be it further
| ||||||
26 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
27 | presented to the family of Lars Hoffman as an expression of our | ||||||
28 | deepest sympathy.
