| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Lars Hoffman, a political and civic "prince" who |
3 |
| served as the Village of Godfrey's first mayor and taught |
4 |
| thousands of students at Lewis and Clark Community College, |
5 |
| died on October 23, 2004; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, He was born December 2, 1940 in Des Moines, Iowa |
7 |
| to Gene L. and Ruth (Hillis) Hoffman, and married the former |
8 |
| Judy G. Callender on May 12, 1984 in Alton; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, He was elected mayor of Godfrey in 1991 and served |
10 |
| for two terms; he was a school board member for the Brussels |
11 |
| Public School District; he was a state representative candidate |
12 |
| in 1978; he was awarded the Citizen of the Year in 2003 by |
13 |
| Pride Inc.; and he was a past recipient of the Elijah P. |
14 |
| Lovejoy Award; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, He received numerous awards for excellence in |
16 |
| teaching during his 35-year teaching career; he was a professor |
17 |
| at Lewis and Clark Community College (LCCC) in Godfrey for 30 |
18 |
| years, a visiting professor at Principia College, and an |
19 |
| adjunct professor at McKendree College; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, He helped implement Model Illinois Government at |
21 |
| LCCC, where college students from across the State debate and |
22 |
| play out the roles of Illinois Senate and House members; he |
23 |
| also produced and hosted a weekly show, "Metro Talk," at LCCC |
24 |
| for Charter Cable that informed the community about local |
25 |
| issues; and

| WHEREAS, He received a bachelor of arts degree from |
27 |
| Grinnell College; he attended the School of International |
28 |
| Service at American University in Washington, D.C. and later |
29 |
| attended the University of Iowa, where he received a master of |
30 |
| arts and a Ph.D in American history and political philosophy; |
