2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | ||||||
3 | learned with regret of the death of Charles Edward "Chuck" | ||||||
4 | Curry on August 21, 2004; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Mr. Curry was born on January 22, 1934 in Jackson, | ||||||
6 | Tennessee to Ersula Curry; he attended St. Joseph's Catholic | ||||||
7 | School for Boys and Merry High School; he received a | ||||||
8 | scholarship to Lane College, where he sang tenor, pledged Omega | ||||||
9 | Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and graduated in 1955; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Mr. Curry valiantly served his country as a member | ||||||
11 | of the U.S. Army; he relocated to Chicago and worked for the | ||||||
12 | U.S. Post Office and in the Chicago Public Schools as a teacher | ||||||
13 | at the Mason Upper Grade Center; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Mr. Curry married Beverly Moore in the fall of | ||||||
15 | 1961; and
| ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, He worked in various professional positions where | ||||||
17 | his gregarious personality served him well; he joined the staff | ||||||
18 | of the Chicago Youth Centers and was an effective worker with | ||||||
19 | street gang members; he later joined the staff of the YMCA of | ||||||
20 | Metropolitan Chicago, where his innate leadership helped to | ||||||
21 | pioneer "Youth Action", a city-wide collaborative initiative | ||||||
22 | to provide outreach services to street gangs; and
| ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, In 1970, Mr. Curry joined the Quaker Oats Company | ||||||
24 | as a Manager of Community Affairs; he continued his dedicated | ||||||
25 | efforts to his community by serving on the boards of various | ||||||
26 | social service and community-based organizations, including | ||||||
27 | the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, Westside Association for | ||||||
28 | Community Action, Urban Programs West, and many others; and
| ||||||
29 | WHEREAS, Through his dual role at the Quaker Oats Company |
| |||||||
| |||||||
1 | and the Quaker Oats Foundation, Mr. Curry was a staunch | ||||||
2 | advocate for youth and continued to find ways to support | ||||||
3 | programs and their efforts on behalf of underserved children, | ||||||
4 | their families, and their communities; he served in a variety | ||||||
5 | of leadership roles, most recently as the President of the | ||||||
6 | Board of Directors of the Westside Association for Community | ||||||
7 | Action Foundations and as the president of the Rat Pack, Inc., | ||||||
8 | a national organization with chapters throughout the U.S.; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, The passing of Mr. Curry has been deeply felt by | ||||||
10 | many, especially his wife, Beverly; his sons, Charles F., David | ||||||
11 | E. (Jennifer), and Michael A.; his grandchildren, Grant Charles | ||||||
12 | and Jackson Riley; his mother-in-law, Dora Moore; his | ||||||
13 | brothers-in-law, Frankie Lee (Pearl), Ronnie (Erna), and Jake | ||||||
14 | (Denise); his sisters-in-law, Jackie Moore, Millicent McGhee, | ||||||
15 | and Jerilyn Brown; his cousins, Helen Osborne, Earl Mae Thomas, | ||||||
16 | Joann Carey, Perry Roosevelt, and Denny Curry; and his many | ||||||
17 | nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a legion of friends; | ||||||
18 | therefore, be it

19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
21 | Charles Edward "Chuck" Curry, and we extend our sincerest | ||||||
22 | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | ||||||
23 | him; and be it further
| ||||||
24 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
25 | presented to the family of Mr. Curry as an expression of our | ||||||
26 | deepest sympathy.
