| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Marine Cpl. |
4 |
| Christopher W. Belchik of Alton who was killed in action August |
5 |
| 22, 2004 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Marine Cpl. Belchik was assigned to the 2nd |
7 |
| Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine |
8 |
| Expeditionary Force from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Marine Cpl. Belchik grew up in Alton, the youngest |
10 |
| of three children; he was unhappy with high school, dropped out |
11 |
| his senior year and began a series of jobs that were always |
12 |
| rigorous, including working as a bus boy in restaurants, and |
13 |
| most recently, as a hod carrier hoisting mortar for bricklayers |
14 |
| during construction season; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, In 1998, he met and started dating Mary Hamberg; |
16 |
| with her support, he decided to pursue joining the Marines; he |
17 |
| later passed the high school equivalency exam and lost about 30 |
18 |
| pounds to join the Marines; and
|
19 |
| WHEREAS, Boot camp was especially challenging for Cpl. |
20 |
| Belchik because he was older than most of the recruits, but he |
21 |
| didn't let that discourage him; he served in South Africa and |
22 |
| Kosovo before going to Iraq in January 2003; he then returned |
23 |
| to Illinois last summer and got married to Mary in June; he |
24 |
| went back to Iraq in February and was expected to come home in |
25 |
| October; and
|
26 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Marine Cpl. Christopher W. Belchik |
27 |
| will be deeply felt by many, especially his parents, Stephen |
28 |
| Belchik and Lynn Kenker; his wife, Mary; his brother, Brian; |
29 |
| and his sister, Julie Prats; therefore, be it
