| SENATE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| were saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Henry DeWitt |
4 |
| Campbell, Sr. on May 25, 2004; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Henry DeWitt Campbell, Sr. was born July 24, 1929, |
6 |
| in East St. Louis; he was the seventh of fourteen children from |
7 |
| the union of the late Moses Campbell, Sr. and Dorothy Olivia |
8 |
| Campbell; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, He attended Dunbar Elementary and Lincoln High |
10 |
| School of East St. Louis; he graduated from Washington |
11 |
| University with a major in Political Science and minors in |
12 |
| History and Russian; he married Elvira Campbell Perry and to |
13 |
| this union were born four children; with the spirit of a modern |
14 |
| Renaissance Man, he traveled abroad to Paris, France where he |
15 |
| obtained certificates in the French language from the |
16 |
| University of Paris-Sorbonne; upon returning to the United |
17 |
| States, he attended Saint Louis University, where he earned his |
18 |
| Master's degree in Secondary and Elementary Education; it was |
19 |
| not long after that he obtained his doctorate degree in |
20 |
| curriculum and instruction in urban education from Saint Louis |
21 |
| University; and
|
22 |
| WHEREAS, During Dr. Campbell's expansive career in |
23 |
| education, he has worked both as an administrator and as a |
24 |
| teacher in secondary schools and colleges; he has made great |
25 |
| contributions in the planning and implementation of |
26 |
| curriculums for programs in social sciences and performing |
27 |
| arts; and
|
28 |
| WHEREAS, He is best known for his work in "Experiment in |
29 |
| Higher Education", a two-year college program sponsored by |
30 |
| Southern Illinois University; he never tired of challenging |
31 |
| complacency in education; on several occasions he was enlisted |
|

| by elected and governmental leaders to assist in the |
2 |
| development of legislation to improve learning opportunities |
3 |
| for all students; and |
4 |
| WHEREAS, He has received numerous awards and accolades for |
5 |
| his work and professional integrity, including the City of East |
6 |
| St. Louis Mayor's Award, for his work and dedication; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell was a true gadgets man, and loved |
8 |
| keeping up with the latest improvements in computers and |
9 |
| technology; when it comes to people, he always looked for and |
10 |
| saw the best in everyone; his compassion and positive |
11 |
| expectations were best revealed when he took time to privately |
12 |
| teach classical piano, musical theory, and music appreciation |
13 |
| to youth; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Henry DeWitt Campbell, Sr. will |
15 |
| be deeply felt by many, especially his children, Milton Moore |
16 |
| and Nancy Moore (Marvine Moore Johnson); Henry (Ann) DeWitt |
17 |
| Campbell, Jr., Donna (Reginald) Campbell Hubbard, Denise |
18 |
| (Eric) Campbell Kayira, and Daniel Henley Campbell; and |
19 |
| Henrietta D. Campbell (Cheryl Denise Coleman); his three |
20 |
| grandchildren, Ciarra A. Burks, Henry D. Campbell, III, Katie |
21 |
| K. Campbell; his brothers and sisters, Robert E. Campbell, |
22 |
| Salena Campbell, Olivia Campbell, and Gloria (Johnny E. Jordan) |
23 |
| C. White; and his many loving nieces, nephews, and their |
24 |
| children; and
|
25 |
| WHEREAS, He was preceded in death by his parents; his |
26 |
| sisters, Marinda Wright and Dorothy Upchurch; and four |
27 |
| brothers, George Campbell, Bertrand Campbell, Robert Campbell, |
28 |
| and Francis Campbell; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL |

| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of |

| Dr. Henry DeWitt Campbell, Sr. along with all who knew and |
