| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Helen J. Shumway of Batavia |
4 |
| on Monday, April 12, 2004; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Helen was born on February 19, 1926, in |
6 |
| Hoardville, Nebraska, to Sture Wallin and Sarah Peterson |
7 |
| Wallin; she was raised on an original family homestead and |
8 |
| learned at a young age to drive a tractor, shoot a gun, and all |
9 |
| the things that her brothers were doing; her family moved to |
10 |
| Illinois during the Great Depression; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Shumway graduated from Batavia High School in |
12 |
| 1943 and married Melvin M. Hann on February 26, 1946; he |
13 |
| preceded her in death in 1968; on July 11, 1970, she married a |
14 |
| high school classmate, John R. Shumway; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, After marrying Mr. Shumway, Mrs. Shumway took up |
16 |
| flying and snow skiing; in their later years, the couple spent |
17 |
| every February in Kauai, roaming up and down dirt cane roads; |
18 |
| as the owners of C.W. Shumway and Sons foundry in Batavia, they |
19 |
| traveled to conventions and to reunions of Mr. Shumway's Naval |
20 |
| Air Group 87; in recent years, she continued to enjoy family |
21 |
| reunions and fishing tournaments; and
|
22 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Shumway supported her children, |
23 |
| grandchildren, her political beliefs, and her church with her |
24 |
| actions as well as words; anything she did, she did with full |
25 |
| force of her considerable personality, energy and talents; she |
26 |
| became active in political work, first serving as a Republican |
27 |
| precinct committee person, then becoming the Batavia Township |
28 |
| Republican chairperson; and
|
29 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Helen J. Shumway has been deeply |
30 |
| felt by many, especially her husband, John R. Shumway; her |
