| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate were saddened |
3 |
| to learn of the death of Silver Suarez of Springfield on May 4, |
4 |
| 2004; and |
5 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Suarez was born June 20, 1913, in Clarksburg, |
6 |
| West Virginia, the son of Ramon and Adella Garcia Suarez; he |
7 |
| married Laura Papi in 1935 in Springfield; and |
8 |
| WHEREAS,
Mr. Suarez worked for the Springfield Police |
9 |
| Department in 1941 and 1942 and from 1946-70; he served as |
10 |
| chief of police for 11 years and joined the training board, |
11 |
| serving as executive director before his retirement in 1980; |
12 |
| and |
13 |
| WHEREAS, He was a United States Marine Corps veteran and |
14 |
| received two Purple Hearts for wounds suffered in the battle of |
15 |
| Iwo Jima; he attended the 41st session of the FBI National |
16 |
| Academy in Washington, D.C.; he was appointed the first |
17 |
| chairman of the Local Governmental Law Enforcement Officers |
18 |
| Training Board in 1965; and |
19 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Suarez received the Copley First Citizen Award |
20 |
| in 1970; he was a life member and past president of the |
21 |
| Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and Police Benevolent |
22 |
| and Protective Association Unit 5 and a life member and |
23 |
| commander of the Hall Hagler Chapter 15 Disabled American |
24 |
| Veterans of Springfield; he served as chairman of the board of |
25 |
| Sacred Heart Credit Union and served on the Springfield Civil |
26 |
| Service Commission from 1982-95; and he was a member of the |
27 |
| Chatham American Legion Post 759 and Christ the King Church, |
28 |
| where he was a member of the Usher's Club and Holy Name |
29 |
| Society; and |
30 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Silver Suarez will be deeply felt |
