| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| learned with sadness of the death of Dr. H. James "Doc" Solomon |
4 |
| of Beach Park on Saturday, April 17, 2004; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, H. James Solomon was born in 1922; he graduated at |
6 |
| the top of his class at the University of Illinois-Chicago |
7 |
| Medical School; following medical school, he opened a clinic at |
8 |
| the coal mines in Kentucky; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, In 1958, Dr. Solomon moved to Zion, opened a |
10 |
| clinic, and began practicing at Zion Hospital; he worked as a |
11 |
| surgeon at area hospitals, including Victory, St. Therese, |
12 |
| Condell, and Good Shepherd; he served as chief of staff at both |
13 |
| Victory and St. Therese hospitals; in the 1970s, he was |
14 |
| Director of Emergency Services for the Zion Fire Department; |
15 |
| and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, when ambulance service was |
17 |
| given up by mortuaries in Zion and other communities and was |
18 |
| moving toward the public and private sector, Dr. Solomon worked |
19 |
| with others to create Zion's emergency medical service; he |
20 |
| trained and offered professional guidance to the pioneers who |
21 |
| volunteered to serve in the field; and
|
22 |
| WHEREAS, In 1986, Dr. Solomon was called on to serve as the |
23 |
| first mayor of Beach Park, as the Village worked toward |
24 |
| incorporation, a position he held from 1986 to 1994; he guided |
25 |
| the Village as it established itself; and
|
26 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Solomon is remembered as a gentleman who |
27 |
| chased after knowledge; his hobby was exploring restaurants and |
28 |
| writing about his experiences; he was a great husband, father, |
29 |
| and grandfather; therefore, be it
