2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate were saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the passing of Karl Joachim "Jock" Weintraub of | ||||||
4 | Hyde Park on March 25, 2004; and | ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Karl Joachim Weintraub was born in Darmstadt, | ||||||
6 | Germany, to a Jewish father and a Christian mother and spent | ||||||
7 | his childhood at a Quaker boarding school in Holland, where he | ||||||
8 | was hidden during World War II by a Christian family and | ||||||
9 | afterwards was sent by the Quakers to live in America, where he | ||||||
10 | eventually found his way to Chicago and enrolled at the | ||||||
11 | University of Chicago; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Mr. Weintraub received a bachelor of arts degree | ||||||
13 | in 1949, a master of arts in 1952, and a Ph.D. in History in | ||||||
14 | 1957; he began teaching as an intern in 1954 at the University | ||||||
15 | of Chicago, where he spent 60 years as a student, professor, | ||||||
16 | and an inspiring mentor to generations of students; and | ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, Mr. Weintraub's course on Western History and | ||||||
18 | Culture had a "rock concert-like" appeal, with spring long | ||||||
19 | being marked by students sleeping out on the university's | ||||||
20 | quadrangle the night before registration in order to secure a | ||||||
21 | place in his class, which many alumni recall as a centerpiece | ||||||
22 | of their education; and | ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, He continued to teach his course even after | ||||||
24 | retiring and refused to accept a salary in quiet protest of the | ||||||
25 | changing styles in higher education, explaining that his | ||||||
26 | experiences with Nazism deepened his determination to keep his | ||||||
27 | course alive; and | ||||||
28 | WHEREAS, In addition to teaching at the University of | ||||||
29 | Chicago, he shared his knowledge by serving as a Life Trustee | ||||||
30 | for Knox College; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Mr. Weintraub also served as a trustee of the Art | ||||||
2 | Institute of Chicago and on the Board of Governors of the | ||||||
3 | School of the Art Institute of Chicago; and | ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Mr. Weintraub was the Thomas E. Donnelly | ||||||
5 | Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in History at the | ||||||
6 | University of Chicago, where his teaching skills earned him two | ||||||
7 | Quantrell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in | ||||||
8 | 1960 and 1986, the Danforth Foundation's E. Harris Harbison | ||||||
9 | Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1967, and the Amoco | ||||||
10 | Foundation Award for Distinguished Contributions to | ||||||
11 | Undergraduate Teaching in 1995; and | ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, In 2001, he received the Norman Maclean Alumni | ||||||
13 | Award, which recognizes emeritus and senior faculty members who | ||||||
14 | have made outstanding contributions to teaching and to the | ||||||
15 | student experience of life on campus; and | ||||||
16 | WHEREAS, Karl Joachim Weintraub was an esteemed scholar and | ||||||
17 | the author of numerous publications, including two books, | ||||||
18 | Visions of Culture: | ||||||
19 | Voltaire-Guizot-Burckhardt-Lamprecht-Huizinga-Ortega y Gassett | ||||||
20 | (1966) and The Value of the Individual: Self and Circumstance | ||||||
21 | in Autobiography (1978); and
| ||||||
22 | WHEREAS, The passing of Karl Joachim Weintraub's passing | ||||||
23 | will be deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Katy O'Brien | ||||||
24 | Weintraub; his sister, Tatjana Wood; and his many colleagues, | ||||||
25 | former students, friends, and family; therefore, be it | ||||||
26 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
27 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of | ||||||
28 | Karl Joachim Weintraub along with all who knew and loved him | ||||||
29 | and extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; | ||||||
30 | and be it further
