| SENATE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
3 |
| were saddened to learn of the passing of Patricia Thompson |
4 |
| Madden, on August 31, 2003; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden was born in Peoria and |
6 |
| moved frequently as a child, living in Chicago; Muncie, |
7 |
| Indiana; Kansas City, Missouri; and Villa Park; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Madden was a member of the first graduating |
9 |
| class of Willowbrook High School in Villa Park and graduated |
10 |
| from the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in |
11 |
| nursing; she received her master's degree in community mental |
12 |
| health nursing from Arizona State University; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Madden went to work after college at the U.S. |
14 |
| Army Hospital in Montgomery, Alabama, where she was a firsthand |
15 |
| witness of the civil rights movement; she became an advocate of |
16 |
| equal rights for all, regardless of race, religion, sexual |
17 |
| orientation, and economic class; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Madden went on to work with psychiatric |
19 |
| patients at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Waco, |
20 |
| Texas, where she witnessed the toll the Vietnam War took on |
21 |
| returning veterans; in the late 1960s, she served as a |
22 |
| psychiatric nurse at Denver General Hospital, and she also |
23 |
| spent several years teaching at California State University in |
24 |
| Sacramento, California; and
|
25 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Madden was appointed Executive Director of |
26 |
| Planned Parenthood of Miami Valley in Dayton, Ohio in 1977, |
27 |
| during which time, she organized one of the largest marches for |
28 |
| abortion and reproductive rights outside of the District of |
29 |
| Columbia; and
|

| WHEREAS, Ms. Madden returned to the Chicago area in 1986 |
2 |
| and began working for the State of Illinois, first as the |
3 |
| Associate Director for Administration of the Illinois State |
4 |
| Psychiatric Institute, and then as the Hospital Administrator |
5 |
| of the John J. Madden Mental Health Center; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Madden was very involved in the Oak Park |
7 |
| community, where she was a sixteen year resident, serving as |
8 |
| chairperson of the Barrie Park Citizens Advisory Committee from |
9 |
| its inception in 1999, and as a member of the First United |
10 |
| Church of Oak Park, where she served as chairperson of the |
11 |
| Christian Education Committee, as a member of the Church |
12 |
| Council, and as an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church; |
13 |
| and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Madden was a woman who dedicated her life to |
15 |
| women's issues, reproductive rights, and persons with mental |
16 |
| illness; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, Patricia Thompson Madden's passing was deeply |
18 |
| felt by many, especially her son and daughter-in-law, Robert |
19 |
| Baren and Alice; her father, Robert Thompson; her sister, |
20 |
| Elizabeth; her brother-in-law, Stanley Hewins; her brother, |
21 |
| Lawrence Robert Thompson; her sister-in-law, Rhonda; her aunt, |
22 |
| Nancy Tobara; her nephews, Jason (wife, Olivia Herrick), |
23 |
| Christopher, Shawn (wife, Daniele), Eric, and Shaden Thompson; |
24 |
| her nieces Carrie and Shaelynn Thompson; and her many friends; |
25 |
| her mother, Dorothy Thompson, is deceased; therefore, be it
|
26 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL |
27 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of |
28 |
| Patricia Thompson Madden; and be it further
|
29 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
30 |
| presented to the family of Patricia Thompson Madden as an |
31 |
| expression of our sorrow for their loss.
