2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | ||||||
3 | were saddened to learn of the death of Maureen Elizabeth | ||||||
4 | McDonald of Chicago on October 17, 2003; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Ms. McDonald was born on August 8, 1946; she grew | ||||||
6 | up in Morgan Park, on Chicago's southwest side, with her | ||||||
7 | parents, Maurine and Matt, her brothers, Matt and Tom, and her | ||||||
8 | sister, Winnie; and
| ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, She attended Saint Cajetan Elementary School, | ||||||
10 | Morgan Park High School, and Webster College in St. Louis, | ||||||
11 | Missouri; during college, she began her political activism by | ||||||
12 | joining Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on his civil rights march | ||||||
13 | to Selma, Alabama; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, After college, she worked with the Contract Buyers | ||||||
15 | League, a community organization in Lawndale on Chicago's west | ||||||
16 | side that brought civil rights lawsuits on behalf of | ||||||
17 | African-American homebuyers who were denied conventional | ||||||
18 | mortgages; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Eventually, she gave in to her longing for | ||||||
20 | adventure and yearning to travel and see the world; she headed | ||||||
21 | to Australia and fell in love with the country and its people; | ||||||
22 | she lived in the Northern Territory for seven years and had | ||||||
23 | several diverse careers; she taught Aboriginal children, | ||||||
24 | managed a hotel, promoted tourism, and visited every part of | ||||||
25 | the country, collecting life-long friends throughout; and
| ||||||
26 | WHEREAS, She returned to her home in Morgan Park, Chicago | ||||||
27 | and tried her hand at many things; for the past twenty years, | ||||||
28 | she worked for the Cook County Public Guardian's Office as a | ||||||
29 | supervisor and a paralegal; she assisted in handling $60 | ||||||
30 | million in assets for the office's 600 adult wards; her |

1 | responsibilities included sorting out and then managing each | ||||||
2 | ward's financial and legal needs; her care for her clients | ||||||
3 | extended even past their deaths; she was adamant that each ward | ||||||
4 | receive a dignified funeral and proper burial; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Besides working at the Public Guardian's Office, | ||||||
6 | she would spend her evenings, weekends, and days off | ||||||
7 | volunteering at homeless shelters, preparing holiday meals | ||||||
8 | with the Little Brothers' Friends of the Elderly, and acting as | ||||||
9 | a tour guide for the City of Chicago's "Greeters" Program; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Throughout her career, she continued to travel | ||||||
11 | throughout the United States and all over the world; she was | ||||||
12 | planning a trip next year to Antarctica and South America to | ||||||
13 | accomplish her goal of visiting all seven continents; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, She will be remembered as more than a paralegal at | ||||||
15 | the Public Guardian's Office; she was a political activist, a | ||||||
16 | volunteer, a book club moderator, a travel agent, a tourist, a | ||||||
17 | funeral director, a fine diner, a theatre critic, an avid | ||||||
18 | reader, a comedian, and a dear friend to many; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Maurine is survived by her mother, Maurine; her | ||||||
20 | brothers, Matt and Tom; her sister, Winnie; and her niece, | ||||||
21 | Maggie; therefore, be it
| ||||||
22 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL | ||||||
23 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of | ||||||
24 | Maureen Elizabeth McDonald along with all who knew and loved | ||||||
25 | her and extend our sincere condolences to her family and | ||||||
26 | friends; and be it further
| ||||||
27 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
28 | presented to the family of Maureen Elizabeth McDonald as an | ||||||
29 | expression of our deepest sympathy.
