093_SR0328 LRB093 14382 HSS 20004 r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois learned with regret of the death of Randy Block on 4 October 3, 2003; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Block was born on February 24, 1953 in Grand 6 Rapids, Michigan; he graduated from Marmion Military Academy 7 in 1970 and Princeton University in 1974 with a major in 8 political science and a minor in physics; he received his law 9 degree from the University of Chicago in 1977; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Block enjoyed sports as a young man, 11 especially basketball and swimming; he liked to work on cars 12 as a hobby and enjoyed taking long drives on empty highways; 13 he was a talented musician and played every brass instrument 14 except the trombone and was learning how to play the woodwind 15 instruments; and 16 WHEREAS, As a young, single professional, Mr. Block loved 17 living in Chicago, especially enjoying the ethnic diversity 18 he found in the food and music; he liked everything about 19 college sports and especially enjoyed the years he was the 20 Division III swimming coach at the University of Chicago; and 21 WHEREAS, Mr. Block loved being a lawyer and loved being a 22 law professor at the University of Chicago; he was nationally 23 recognized with his published work that dealt with executive 24 privilege; and 25 WHEREAS, Mr. Block's life dramatically changed 22 years 26 ago after a serious automobile accident; he lived his life 27 with dignity and continued to love his family, friends, and 28 caregivers; he served as an example of perseverance under 29 unbearable pain; and 30 WHEREAS, Mr. Block enjoyed western movies and had an 31 extensive baseball hat collection; the law and sports -2- LRB093 14382 HSS 20004 r 1 continued to interest him; and 2 WHEREAS, The passing of Mr. Block has been deeply felt by 3 many, especially his brothers, George, Edward, and Casey 4 (Charles), and his stepmother, Mary Block; he was preceded in 5 death by his father, Dr. George Block, and his mother, 6 Elizabeth; therefore, be it 7 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL 8 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing 9 of Randy Block, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his 10 friends, family, and all who knew and loved him; and be it 11 further 12 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 13 presented to the family of Randy Block as an expression of 14 our sincere condolences.
