093_SR0299 LRB093 13162 KEF 18425 r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Waid 4 Vanderpoel of Barrington on August 25, 2003; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Vanderpoel was born in Chicago's Norwood 6 Park neighborhood on the Northwest side; he graduated from 7 Schurz High School in 1939; in 1943, he obtained a business 8 and finance degree from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa; 9 and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Vanderpoel served as an Army corporal from 11 1943 to 1945; in 1946, he became an institutional investor at 12 First National Bank of Chicago; by the time he retired in 13 1981 he was senior vice president and chief investment 14 officer; he managed the pension funds of a number of area 15 companies, including Caterpillar Inc.; and 16 WHEREAS, After his retirement, Mr. Vanderpoel was allowed 17 to devote more time to his conservation efforts; he was an 18 advocate of open space and was instrumental in sparing a 19 large tract of land from development in the northwest 20 suburbs; he was the chief negotiator for the purchase of what 21 is now known as Flint Creek; it continued until 2000, when 22 the Barrington group purchased an adjoining 60 acres from a 23 developer; he was a member of the organization for more than 24 20 years, nearly half of that as president; and 25 WHEREAS, In April of 2002, the Flint Creek Savanna was 26 dedicated to Mr. Vanderpoel in honor of his 80th birthday; 27 and 28 WHEREAS, Mr. Vanderpoel's passing will be deeply felt by 29 many, especially his wife, Ruth; his sons, Thomas, John, 30 William, and James; his brother, Robert; and his eight 31 grandchildren; and many dear friends; therefore, be it -2- LRB093 13162 KEF 18425 r 1 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL 2 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing 3 of Waid Vanderpoel along with all who knew and loved him and 4 extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and 5 be it further 6 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 7 presented to the family of Waid Vanderpoel as an expression 8 of our deepest sympathy.
