093_SR0106 LRB093 11373 KEF 13667 r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of John Clifford 4 Hedley of Aurora on November 18, 2002; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Hedley was born in Buffalo; his family later 6 moved to New York City, where he attended City College of New 7 York for one year before being drafted into the Army during 8 the Korean War, where he served as a paratrooper; and 9 WHEREAS, After his discharge, he returned to New York and 10 ran the payroll department for Union Carbide while attending 11 college at night; and 12 WHEREAS, Mr. Hedley received a bachelor's degree in 13 economics from City College in 1958; soon after, Kroger Foods 14 hired him as a benefits administrator, working first in 15 Cincinnati, then in Chicago; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Hedley started with Morton Salt in 1964; 17 during his tenure at Morton, he negotiated all collective 18 bargaining agreements; he was the Salt Group vice president 19 of employee relations until 1990, when he became vice 20 president of human resources and an officer of the company; 21 he retired in 1994; and 22 WHEREAS, Mr. Hedley met his wife Joan in Chicago, and 23 they were married in 1967; and 24 WHEREAS, Mr. Hedley had a long affiliation with Marmion 25 Academy that began when his two sons attended the Roman 26 Catholic private boys school; he was named to the board of 27 trustees in 1984 and served as chairman from 1992 to 1994, 28 the first non-Catholic to do so; and 29 WHEREAS, Mr. Hedley served on the board of the Mark 30 Morton Foundation in Chicago and was a former trustee of the -2- LRB093 11373 KEF 13667 r 1 Cathedral Shelter in Chicago; and 2 WHEREAS, Mr. Hedley was a member of the Church of the 3 Ascension in Chicago and St. Helena's Episcopal Church in 4 Beaufort, South Carolina; he was also a docent for the 5 Historical Beaufort Foundation and at the lighthouse at 6 Hunting Island, S.C.; and 7 WHEREAS, Mr. Hedley's passing will be deeply felt by 8 many, especially his wife, Joan; his sons, John and Neville; 9 his brother, Wilson; his sister, Helen Wally; and his 10 grandson; therefore, be it 11 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL 12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of 13 John Clifford Hedley along with all who knew and loved him 14 and extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends; 15 and be it further 16 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 17 presented to the family of John Clifford Hedley with our 18 deepest sympathy.
