093_SR0079 LRB093 11243 HSS 12534 r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Stanley 4 Francis Tomkovick on February 14, 2003; and 5 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick was born in Waukegan on October 8, 6 1916 to Stanley and Julia (Stachowicz) Tomkowicz; he 7 graduated Waukegan Township High School in 1934; and 8 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick attended Northern Illinois 9 University and received a B.E. with a major in social studies 10 and a minor in English; he played varsity golf at Northern 11 Illinois University; he was in the post graduate extension 12 program in Cambridge, England from 1947 to 1948 and received 13 an M.A. in Guidance and Administration in 1951; he did 14 further post graduate studies at Northwestern University in 15 Evanston; and 16 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick valiantly served his country as a 17 pilot in the 375th Bomb Squadron, 308th Bomb Group, 14th Air 18 Force Flying Tigers from 1941 until 1944; he was stationed in 19 Cheng King which is near Kunming, China; he served under 20 General Claire L. Chennault and was decorated with the U.S. 21 Air Medal and the Chinese War Air Medal; and 22 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick taught at Woodstock Junior High 23 School, Waukegan Township High School, and North Chicago 24 Community High School; he taught social studies, English, and 25 general math, and was an exchange teacher at Colsterworth 26 School in Colsterworth near Granthan, Lincolnshire, England; 27 he worked as guidance counselor; golf coach; guidance 28 director; assistant principal, guidance and curriculum; and 29 principal; and 30 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick was the golf coach at Waukegan 31 Township High School for ten years and had teams that placed -2- LRB093 11243 HSS 12534 r 1 seventh and second in State tournaments; he instructed golf 2 for seven years at North Chicago Community High School 3 Evening School following his retirement; and 4 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick was a member of numerous civic and 5 professional organizations; he served as President of the 6 North Chicago Club of Rotary International and North Chicago 7 Little League, and was the first President of Partners in 8 Progress With North Chicago School District 187 Foundation; 9 he was a Paul Harris Fellow; and 10 WHEREAS, Mr. Tomkovick was listed in the 1976-77 edition 11 of Who's Who in the Midwest and contributed materials for a 12 chapter to Guidance: Principles and Services by Frank W. 13 Miller; and 14 WHEREAS, The passing of Mr. Tomkovick has been deeply 15 felt by all who knew him, especially his wife, Joan 16 (Johnston); his three children, John (Nancy), Charles, and 17 Julianne; his granddaughter, Jessica; his foster daughter, 18 Joanne (John) Zimmerman; his three foster granddaughters, 19 Anne (Mark) Overby, Dara (Jim) Schulenberg, and Ria (Andrew) 20 Sharon; his foster great-grandson, Max Overby; his two foster 21 great-granddaughters, Madeline Schulenberg and Mason Sharon; 22 and his many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it 23 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL 24 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing 25 of Stanley Francis Tomkovick and extend to his family, 26 friends, and all who loved him our deepest sympathy; and be 27 it further 28 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 29 presented to the family of Stanley Tomkovick as a token of 30 our sincerest condolences.
