093_SR0061 LRB093 11203 KEF 12232 r 1 SENATE RESOLUTION 2 WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of 3 Illinois were saddened to learn of the death of Leonard 4 Mitchell Sr.; and 5 WHEREAS, On January 29, 1938, Lillie and Roosevelt 6 Mitchell Sr. were blessed with the birth of their ninth child 7 Leonard Mitchell; "Lane" as he was affectionately called was 8 destined to do great things; he embraced life with his arms 9 wide opened; and 10 WHEREAS, The Chicago public school system was the avenue 11 that provided the educational process for him; he started his 12 elementary education at Alfred Lloyd Tennyson Elementary 13 School; he attended and graduated from Crane Technical High 14 School in 1956 and went on to attend Crane Junior College; 15 and 16 WHEREAS, On June 2, 1958, Mr. Mitchell was united in Holy 17 Matrimony to Diane Marie Landing; this union was blessed to 18 continue on for 42 years, 9 months and 14 days; they were 19 blessed with four sons and one daughter; his enormous love 20 and dedication as a family man went beyond his own children 21 and he opened his heart and home to another legal son and a 22 special daughter; and 23 WHEREAS, Very early in his childhood, he accepted Christ 24 at Good Hope COGIC; he recommitted his life and joined J. W. 25 James Memorial A.M.E. Church in Maywood on February 24, 1974; 26 he was later baptized at the old Rock of Ages Church in 27 Maywood; as a committed servant at James Memorial, he served 28 faithfully in numerous ministries, which included the 29 Sanctuary Choir, Lay Organization, Finance Commissioner, and 30 Class Leader; he was a devoted and faithful Trustee and 31 served his church in a very special way; he was appointed the 32 first Trustee Emeritus of J. W. James Memorial A.M.E. Church -2- LRB093 11203 KEF 12232 r 1 Trustee's Board; and 2 WHEREAS, Leonard Mitchell Sr. was a God given example for 3 all who knew him; he exemplified a true man of God; as a 4 protector of his country, he served in the United States Army 5 for 3 years and 6 months and was awarded an honorable 6 discharge; as a provider for his family, he maintained 7 employment for 40 years as a supervisor for one employer; he 8 will be remembered for his many God given talents; therefore, 9 be it 10 RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL 11 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the death of 12 Leonard Mitchell Sr. along with all who knew him and extend 13 our sincere condolences to his family and friends; and be it 14 further 15 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 16 presented to the family of Leonard Mitchell Sr. as an 17 expression of our sympathy.
