| SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Senator John W. Maitland, Jr. was born in Normal, |
3 |
| Ill., on July 29, 1936, to John and Elsa Maitland; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, Senator Maitland is a graduate of Normal Community |
5 |
| High School and Illinois State University and served in the |
6 |
| United States Marine Corps; and Senator Maitland married his |
7 |
| wife, Joanna Sieg, and together they have three children, Jody |
8 |
| Ann, Johnny, and Jay, and six grandchildren; and |
9 |
| WHEREAS, Senator Maitland, a resident of Bloomington, |
10 |
| served in the Illinois State Senate from 1979 until he resigned |
11 |
| in April 2002 because of health reasons; and |
12 |
| WHEREAS, During those 23 years, he earned the respect of |
13 |
| his colleagues, both Republicans and Democrats, because he |
14 |
| demonstrated the rare ability to get things done; when he rose |
15 |
| to speak in the Senate, people recognized his command of the |
16 |
| issues - especially agriculture and education; and |
17 |
| WHEREAS, Senator Maitland is a nationally recognized |
18 |
| expert on agriculture issues and has first-hand knowledge of |
19 |
| the needs of farmers; he has spent long hours in the fields |
20 |
| raising grain; he was president of the local county Farm |
21 |
| Bureau; he has studied agriculture and conservation issues in |
22 |
| other states; his expertise was the driving force behind the |
23 |
| long-sought compromise, forged in 1999, for the regulation of |
24 |
| large livestock production facilities in Illinois; and |
25 |
| WHEREAS, Senator Maitland is a strong advocate and tireless |
26 |
| champion of a quality education, having served in leadership |
27 |
| roles on committees and commissions that analyzed and set |
28 |
| education policy affecting Illinois students across the State; |
29 |
| he had a leadership role in every major effort to improve |
30 |
| education in the last two decades, including the Illinois |
