093_SB1997eng SB1997 Engrossed LRB093 08504 RCE 08728 b 1 AN ACT concerning the Illinois Military Flags Commission. 2 Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, 3 represented in the General Assembly: 4 Section 5. The Military Code of Illinois is amended by 5 adding Section 25.6 as follows: 6 (20 ILCS 1805/25.6 new) 7 Sec. 25.6. Illinois Military Flags Commission. 8 (a) The Illinois Military Flags Commission is 9 established for the purpose of assisting the Adjutant General 10 with his or her responsibilities under Section 25 of this 11 Code. The Commission shall advise the Adjutant General on 12 how to best collect, preserve, and present or display to the 13 public the colors, flags, guidons, and military trophies of 14 war belonging to the State in order to disseminate 15 information relating to the history of the Illinois National 16 Guard. 17 (b) The Commission consists of 15 members: the Adjutant 18 General, the State Historian, the Director of the Illinois 19 State Museum, and the Director of the Historic Preservation 20 Agency, all ex officio; 4 members of the General Assembly, 21 one of whom shall be appointed by the President of the 22 Senate, one by the Minority Leader of the Senate, one by the 23 Speaker of the House of Representatives, and one by the 24 Minority Leader of the House of Representatives; and 7 25 residents of the State appointed by the Governor. When 26 appointing members to the Commission, the Governor must 27 endeavor to appoint persons in a manner to maintain as 28 regionally diverse a membership as possible. Persons 29 appointed to the Commission should provide it with experience 30 in areas such as, but not limited to, knowledge of military 31 history, particularly of the American Civil War, and the SB1997 Engrossed -2- LRB093 08504 RCE 08728 b 1 education of citizens. Any vacancy in the Commission shall 2 be filled by an appointment in the same manner as the 3 original appointment. Members of the Commission shall serve 4 without compensation, but shall be reimbursed for their 5 reasonable expenses incurred in the performance of their 6 duties. 7 (c) This Section is repealed on January 1, 2006. 8 Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon 9 becoming law.
