| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives wish to congratulate Dr. Martha U. Gillette, |
4 |
| professor of cell and structural biology at the University of |
5 |
| Illinois Urbana-Champaign, for receiving the Women in |
6 |
| Neuroscience Mika Salpeter Lifetime Achievement Award; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, Women in Neuroscience, an international |
8 |
| organization formed to promote the advancement of women in the |
9 |
| field of neuroscience at all levels, awards the Mika Salpeter |
10 |
| Lifetime Achievement Award annually to one recipient; |
11 |
| qualifications for receiving the award include: sustained |
12 |
| exceptional achievements in neuroscience as evidenced by |
13 |
| publications, inventions, or awards; service to the |
14 |
| neuroscience profession through related organizations; |
15 |
| recognition at national or international levels as a scientist, |
16 |
| educator, businessperson, or administrator in neuroscience; |
17 |
| demonstration of a high degree of imagination, innovation, and |
18 |
| initiative in the pursuit of neuroscience; an unusual |
19 |
| dedication to facilitating the entry, mentoring, and |
20 |
| advancement of young women in the field of neuroscience; and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Gillette is exceptionally qualified for this |
22 |
| award; she is head of the Department of Cell and Structural |
23 |
| Biology and a professor of cell and structural biology and |
24 |
| molecular and integrative physiology at the University of |
25 |
| Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; she has an appointment to the |
26 |
| Institute for Genomic Biology; she co-chairs two Chancellor's |
27 |
| Cross-Campus Initiatives; her work includes ground-breaking |
28 |
| research in the field of sleep disorders; and
|
29 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Gillette has been a member of the University |
30 |
| of Illinois faculty since 1989; since 1986 she has been a |
31 |
| mentor to female medical scholars and female graduate and |
32 |
| postdoctoral researchers; Dr. Gillette was instrumental in |
