| WHEREAS, A long-time Hyde Parker, Dr. Edward Wasserman, |
3 |
| died October 24, 2004 at the age of 76; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, Born to politically progressive Russian |
5 |
| immigrants in Oak Park, he first moved to Hyde Park as a |
6 |
| 16-year-old University of Chicago undergraduate; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, While studying to be a psychiatrist at the |
8 |
| University of Illinois Medical School, he met Eileen Kronberg, |
9 |
| whom he married in 1956; and
|
10 |
| WHEREAS, Because of his independent political beliefs and |
11 |
| his mother's political affiliations, the Army deemed him a |
12 |
| security threat at first and did not draft him; as the Korean |
13 |
| conflict escalated and Army doctors became scarce, the |
14 |
| McCarthy-era restrictions were loosened, but not by much; he |
15 |
| was not allowed to practice as a psychiatrist or given the |
16 |
| security clearance that would allow him to be commissioned as |
17 |
| an officer as is the custom for military doctors; after more |
18 |
| than a year of service, the Army threatened him with a |
19 |
| dishonorable discharge and he stood trial; his named was |
20 |
| cleared, and the next day his rank jumped from private to |
21 |
| captain; and

| WHEREAS, After graduating from Chicago's Psychoanalytic |
23 |
| Institute, he built up a private psychotherapy practice, where |
24 |
| he worked until his mid 60s; after closing his practice, he |
25 |
| worked with mentally troubled prison inmates for the Indiana |
26 |
| Department of Corrections; throughout his life, he remained |
27 |
| active in the political fight for social justice and peace; and
|
28 |
| WHEREAS, He was a lifelong fan of music, and enjoyed |
29 |
| playing blues harmonica at the Old Town School of Folk Music |
30 |
| where he had been attending classes for a decade; and
