| WHEREAS, Joseph E. Shacter has announced that he is |
3 |
| retiring as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Peggy |
4 |
| Notebaert Nature Museum of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, |
5 |
| located in Chicago's Lincoln Park community; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum opened in |
7 |
| October 1999 and carries on the Academy's mission of exploring |
8 |
| and nurturing the environment; the Museum serves as the |
9 |
| cornerstone for Academy research projects and provides |
10 |
| nationally recognized educational outreach programming; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, Joe Shacter was appointed President and Chief |
12 |
| Executive Officer of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum on |
13 |
| November 1, 2000; under his dynamic leadership, the Museum has |
14 |
| raised $4.1 million to upgrade or replace five of six permanent |
15 |
| galleries and beautify the Museum's exterior with various types |
16 |
| of native landscaping, including rooftop gardens; assembled a |
17 |
| top-notch staff that brings creativity and a strong commitment |
18 |
| to the Museum's mission to inspire people to learn and care for |
19 |
| nature; maintained a balanced budget year after year; increased |
20 |
| attendance 56% compared to the year he arrived; and committed |
21 |
| $1 million per year in educational funding to reach more |
22 |
| children in outreach programs than any other Museums in the |
23 |
| Park institution, increasing philanthropic revenue growth more |
24 |
| than 40%; and

25 |
| WHEREAS, During Joe Shacter's tenure, the Museum has also |
26 |
| redefined its mission statement, initiated a comprehensive |
27 |
| strategic planning process to renew its focus, aligned |
28 |
| educational programs to the organizational mission, developed |
29 |
| a comprehensive, multi-year plan for education programs - |
30 |
| Teaching Green - to coincide with the institutional strategic |
31 |
| plan, developed successful working partnerships with numerous |
32 |
| city departments, and built strong relationships with |
