HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives offer our sincere congratulations to the 
4
American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa in honor of its 
5
100th anniversary; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, The American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa 
7
was founded in 1904 and is the oldest voluntary health 
8
organization in the United States; and

 
9
    WHEREAS, This organization was originally founded to 
10
eradicate tuberculosis and has expanded its mission to include 
11
lung disease in all forms, with a special emphasis on asthma, 
12
tobacco control, and environmental health; and

 
13
    WHEREAS, The many successes of the American Lung 
14
Association of Illinois-Iowa are achieved through the work of 
15
thousands of committed volunteers and staff; and

 
16
    WHEREAS, Today, the American Lung Association of 
17
Illinois-Iowa fights lung disease through research, education, 
18
and public advocacy; and

 
19
    WHEREAS, Through the revolutionary Call Center, the 
20
general public can get immediate answers to lung health 
21
questions; and

 
22
    WHEREAS, The Call Center has answered nearly 10,000 
23
Illinois and Iowa phone calls relating to lung health, and has 
24
been embraced by the American Lung Association offices 
25
throughout the country as the National Call Center; and

 
26
    WHEREAS, The asthma education and smoking cessation 
27
programs created by the American Lung Association have been 
28
recognized as the most effective and innovative tools

available; and

    WHEREAS, The groundbreaking research done by this 
3
organization is focused on practical and relevant issues 
4
relating to asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and 
5
patient care; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, This research has led to major breakthroughs in 
7
the health industry, such as the use of lifesaving surfactant 
8
therapy for thousands of premature infants with respiratory 
9
distress syndrome; and

 
10
    WHEREAS, The American Lung Association's Illinois-Iowa 
11
advocacy programs work to influence the development and 
12
enforcement of laws and regulations related to lung health at 
13
the national, state, and local levels; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, This organization has helped to educate the 
15
Illinois General Assembly about important issues and policies 
16
related to lung health; and

 
17
    WHEREAS, Through its policies and mission-driven 
18
activities, the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa has 
19
worked to utilize diversity outreach strategies as a tool in 
20
the fight against lung diseases that affect minority groups; 
21
and

 
22
    WHEREAS, The American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa 
23
has informed and educated the public about the impact and 
24
prevention of lung disease by disseminating information 
25
through all available channels; and

 
26
    WHEREAS, It has mounted successful legislative efforts to 
27
protect our children from tobacco interests, as well as 
28
protecting the air we breathe; and

    WHEREAS, We recognize the 100 years of service the American 
2
Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa has provided to communities; 
3
therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
5
NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
6
do hereby offer our congratulations to the American Lung 
7
Association of Illinois-Iowa; and be it further

 
8
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
9
presented to the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa.
