| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives wish to congratulate Harold 'Sparky' Songer on |
4 |
| being chosen as a 2004 Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award |
5 |
| recipient; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, The Illinois Humanities Council chose Harold |
7 |
| Songer as a 2004 award recipient for his efforts in turning the |
8 |
| former library in the Carnegie Building in Danville into the |
9 |
| Vermilion County War Museum; the museum opened on Veterans Day |
10 |
| in 1999; and
|
11 |
| WHEREAS, The Illinois Humanities Council established the |
12 |
| Studs Terkel Humanities Service Awards to celebrate unsung |
13 |
| "humanities heroes" throughout Illinois; the award is named |
14 |
| after the prize-winning oral historian and author, Studs |
15 |
| Terkel, a prominent son of Illinois; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, Mayor Scott Eisenhauer of Danville nominated |
17 |
| Harold Songer for the award because of his efforts in leading a |
18 |
| group of volunteers to create the war museum to honor local and |
19 |
| national heroes, and to recognize Mr. Songer and the other |
20 |
| volunteers not only for the tourism impact they have generated |
21 |
| for the city by the creation of the museum, but more for |
22 |
| providing a place of learning so that all may realize the price |
23 |
| paid for our freedom; and
|
24 |
| WHEREAS, Since the opening of the museum, thousands of |
25 |
| school children, adults and military personnel have visited the |
26 |
| site, and it is now widely known as one of the premier war |
27 |
| museums in the Midwest; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
29 |
| NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |

| along with the citizens of this great state, we congratulate |
