2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
3 | Representatives wish to congratulate Darlene M. Shannon on her | ||||||
4 | retirement after 34 years of teaching and advising students at | ||||||
5 | Steeleville Community Unit Schools; and | ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, As a farm girl in Hamilton County, Darlene Marie | ||||||
7 | (Karcher) Shannon attended grade school at Piopolis and | ||||||
8 | McLeansboro; and | ||||||
9 | WHEREAS, In 1966, she graduated from McLeansboro High | ||||||
10 | School and enrolled at Southern Illinois University | ||||||
11 | Carbondale; in 1970, she received her Bachelor of Science | ||||||
12 | Degree in Business Education and was employed by Steeleville | ||||||
13 | Community Unit Schools; while teaching, she earned her Master's | ||||||
14 | Degree in Business Education in 1975 from SIU Carbondale; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, For Steeleville Community Unit Schools, she | ||||||
16 | taught keyboarding to high school and grade school students, | ||||||
17 | Business English, Accounting I and II, clerical practice, | ||||||
18 | salesmanship, shorthand, information processing, and record | ||||||
19 | keeping; she also taught adult education keyboarding at John A. | ||||||
20 | Logan and a Business English class for SIU Carbondale; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Along with teaching at Steeleville, Mrs. Shannon | ||||||
22 | was an adviser for the following: Future Business Leaders of | ||||||
23 | America (FBLA), Pep Club, the Student Activity Board, the | ||||||
24 | Student Athletic Council, yearbook staff, and classes; while | ||||||
25 | yearbook adviser, the staff received the Golden Dozen Award | ||||||
26 | from the Southern Illinois School Press Association 9 years; | ||||||
27 | she has served as the adviser to 33 Southern Area FBLA | ||||||
28 | officers, 11 Illinois FBLA State officers, and many area, | ||||||
29 | state, and national competitive event winners from | ||||||
30 | Steeleville; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In addition being an FBLA chapter adviser for 34 | ||||||
2 | years, Mrs. Shannon served as the Illinois FBLA State Adviser | ||||||
3 | for 16 years and on the National FBLA-PBL Board of Directors | ||||||
4 | for 3 years; she is continuing to serve as the Illinois | ||||||
5 | FBLA-PBL State Chairman, a position that she has held for 4 | ||||||
6 | years; and

7 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Shannon's recognitions include the Mary E. | ||||||
8 | Webb Award for Outstanding Illinois FBLA Advisers, National | ||||||
9 | outstanding Local FBLA Adviser Award, southern Illinois | ||||||
10 | Business Teacher of the Year, Those Who Excel Classroom Teacher | ||||||
11 | Award of Merit, and Southern Illinois School Press Association | ||||||
12 | Adviser of the Year; and
| ||||||
13 | WHEREAS, In 1971, she married Dan Shannon from Cisne, whom | ||||||
14 | she met as a student worker at Textbook Service at SIUC; Mr. | ||||||
15 | Shannon retired after 35 years of employment at SIUC where his | ||||||
16 | job duties included research, service, and teaching; he is | ||||||
17 | presently working part time with the SIU Center for Rural | ||||||
18 | Health and the Safety Center; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Mrs. Shannon will be retiring at the end of the | ||||||
20 | 2003-04 school year; she feels blessed to have had such a | ||||||
21 | wonderful school district and community in which to spend her | ||||||
22 | teaching career; and; therefore, be it
| ||||||
23 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
24 | NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
25 | congratulate Darlene M. Shannon on her retirement after many | ||||||
26 | years of dedication to the cause of education, and we wish her | ||||||
27 | good health and happiness in all her future endeavors; and be | ||||||
28 | it further

29 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
30 | presented to Darlene M. Shannon as an expression of our respect | ||||||
31 | and esteem.
