| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |

| Representatives wish to congratulate Nona Alverda Tierney, an |
4 |
| esteemed resident of Alton, on the occasion of the celebration |
5 |
| of her 90th birthday in September 2004; and |
6 |
| WHEREAS, Nona Alverda Tierney was born on September 7, 1914 |
7 |
| in Bridgewater, Iowa, one of eleven children born to parents |
8 |
| Guy Greenleaf Lowry and Carrie Clyde Standley; and |
9 |
| WHEREAS, She attended school in Fontanelle, Iowa and earned |
10 |
| her teacher's certificate in elementary education in 1932; and |
11 |
| WHEREAS, She married William Patrick Tierney on February |
12 |
| 12, 1938 in Wheatland, Wyoming; and |
13 |
| WHEREAS, Nona Alverda Tierney and William Tierney had three |
14 |
| children, Sherryl A. Unger, William P. Tierney, and Mary E. |
15 |
| Tierney; they have 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and |
16 |
| 2 great-great-grandchildren; and |
17 |
| WHEREAS, She has lived at 400 Brentwood Street in Alton for |
18 |
| 62 years and takes great pride in maintaining her yard and |
19 |
| flower beds; she also researched and published a book on the |
20 |
| history of Brentwood Street; and |
21 |
| WHEREAS, She has been an active member of the First |
22 |
| Christian Church of Alton since 1945; and |
23 |
| WHEREAS, Nona Alverda Tierney has been a teacher's aid in |
24 |
| the Grandparents Program of the Alton school system for 18 |
25 |
| years (1979-1997); and
|
26 |
| WHEREAS, She volunteered as a Gray Lady visiting patients |
27 |
| at a local hospital; and she was honored by the Masons in |
