HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Rabbi Meir
4 Shapiro on the occasion of his retirement after 40 years of
5 service as principal at Arie Crown Hebrew Day School; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Rabbi Shapiro, the son of the late Rabbi Dr.
7 Joseph and Bluma Shapiro, was raised in Pittsburg, where his
8 father served as the revered spiritual leader of a prominent
9 synagogue; and
 
10     WHEREAS, In addition to having earned a Master's Degree in
11 Educational Supervision, Rabbi Shapiro received his rabbinic
12 ordination in 1956, from Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, widely
13 recognized as one of the greatest Torah scholars of the past
14 century; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Rabbi Shapiro has served the students of Arie
16 Crown Hebrew Day School with devotion to the development of
17 each individual, for the past 40 years; during that time, Arie
18 Crown Hebrew Day School has tripled in size to more than 600
19 students and become one of the most prominent and successful
20 Jewish day schools in the United States; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Rabbi Shapiro has served as a role model for the
22 intellectual, spiritual, moral, and character development of
23 his students; he has been a mentor to hundreds of teachers, and
24 has been a positive influence in the lives of thousands of
25 young Jewish men and women, many of whom have become leaders in
26 the Chicago Jewish community and beyond; and
 
27     WHEREAS, Rabbi Shapiro and his wife, Elizabeth Fischer
28 Shapiro, have 2 children, Leah and Hillel, who both attended
29 and graduated from Arie Crown Hebrew Day School; Rabbi and Mrs.
30 Shapiro are the proud grandparents of 13 children; and

1     WHEREAS, Mrs. Shapiro served Arie Crown Hebrew Day School
2 as an involved parent, rising through the ranks to serve as
3 president of the Parent Teacher Association, and she has also
4 served for many years as the supervisor of early childhood
5 education for the Associated Talmud Torahs of Chicago; and
 
6     WHEREAS, On Sunday, June 6, 2004, Rabbi and Mrs. Shapiro
7 will be honored by those whose lives he has touched, and who
8 will be forever grateful for his special and lifelong
9 dedication to education, with a banquet and other festivities;
10 therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
12 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13 congratulate Rabbi Meir Shapiro on the occasion of his
14 retirement after 40 years of dedicated service as principal at
15 Arie Crown Hebrew Day School; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to Rabbi Meir Shapiro as an expression of our respect
18 and esteem.
