| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives offer our sincere congratulations to Coach Joe |
4 |
| Newton on his 75th birthday and on his many years of success; |
5 |
| and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Joe Newton is one of the most talented and |
7 |
| successful cross country and track coaches in history; and
|
8 |
| WHEREAS, Coach Newton's love for the sport began as a |
9 |
| student at Parker High School on Chicago's South Side, where he |
10 |
| was named a High School All-American and won 12 major letters; |
11 |
| and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, His running career continued as a sprinter at |
13 |
| Northwestern University where he received his Bachelor of |
14 |
| Science degree in 1951 and his Master of Arts degree in 1952; |
15 |
| and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, He answered the call to serve his country as a |
17 |
| member of the United States Army; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Prior to beginning his high school coaching |
19 |
| career, Coach Newton was the Head Track Coach at Ft. Leonard |
20 |
| Wood, Missouri, where he coached three Olympic runners; and
|
21 |
| WHEREAS, His coaching career as member of the York |
22 |
| Community High School family began in 1956; and
|
23 |
| WHEREAS, Coach Newton has lead the York Community High |
24 |
| School Dukes to an unprecedented 24 State Championship Titles |
25 |
| and 19 National Cross Country Championships; and
|
26 |
| WHEREAS, The Northern Illinois Track Coaches Association |
27 |
| has named Coach Newton the High School Cross Country Coach of |
|

| the Year 16 times in addition to being named the Illinois High |
2 |
| School Coaches Association's Coach of the Year 15 times; and
|
3 |
| WHEREAS, The success and leadership of Coach Newton was |
4 |
| recognized when he became the first high school coach to be |
5 |
| selected to represent our country as an Olympic Coach for the |
6 |
| United States Track and Field Team in 1988 at Seoul, Korea; and
|
7 |
| WHEREAS, The National High School Athletic Coaches |
8 |
| Association Hall of Fame, the United States Track Coaches |
9 |
| Association Hall of Fame, the Northwestern University Hall of |
10 |
| Fame, the United States Track and Field Federation Hall of |
11 |
| Fame, the Northern Illinois Track and Cross Country Association |
12 |
| Hall of Fame, and the Gatorade Coaches Hall of Fame have all |
13 |
| bestowed upon Coach Newton the honor of being an inductee; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Coach Newton touches the lives of runners and |
15 |
| coaches across the nation as a gifted author and motivational |
16 |
| speaker; and
|
17 |
| WHEREAS, Coach Newton's dynamic, energetic, and zealous |
18 |
| devotion to his students has taught us the true definition of a |
19 |
| champion; and
|
20 |
| WHEREAS, He has touched the lives of countless young |
21 |
| athletes and taught them to achieve greatness both on and off |
22 |
| the field; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
24 |
| NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
25 |
| do hereby offer our congratulations to Coach Joe Newton on the |
26 |
| occasion of his 75th birthday and on his many years of success; |
27 |
| and be it further

| RESOLVED,That a suitable copy of this resolution be |

| presented to Coach Joe Newton and his family.
