HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Consumer Reports magazine has reported that 58
3 children in the United States were accidentally killed by
4 backing vehicles during 2002; and
 
5     WHEREAS, An estimated 60% of these fatalities involve
6 drivers who were parents or close relatives of the victims; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Technology is available to give every driver a
8 better view of the area immediately behind his or her vehicle;
9 therefore be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12 urge our elected Representatives and Senators in the United
13 State Congress to enact legislation requiring every car, sport
14 utility vehicle, and pickup truck manufactured on or after
15 January 1, 2006 to be equipped with mirrors, sensors, a camera,
16 or other device giving the driver an unobstructed view of the
17 entire area immediately behind the vehicle; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
19 delivered to the president pro tempore of the U.S. Senate, the
20 Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S.
21 Secretary of Transportation, and each member of the Illinois
22 congressional delegation.
