| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
3 |
| State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Dr. Kevin Stein |
4 |
| on being named Poet Laureate for the State of Illinois; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Stein is the author of five books of poetry, |
6 |
| two scholarly books, and numerous poems published in |
7 |
| prestigious journals and anthologies; he coauthored the book |
8 |
| Illinois Voices, an anthology of twentieth century Illinois |
9 |
| poetry; he attracted a broad audience of readers, both within |
10 |
| the State and on a national level, with his poems that draw |
11 |
| from his personal experiences, both historical and current, and |
12 |
| have been described as being "evocative journeys into the drama |
13 |
| of the human condition"; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Stein was the recipient of the 1987 Frederick |
15 |
| Bock Price awarded by "Poetry", the 1992 Devins Award for |
16 |
| Poetry, the 1998 Indiana Review Poetry Award, and he was a |
17 |
| nominee for the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 2001; and
|
18 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Stein is a recognized teacher and the creative |
19 |
| writing program director at Bradley University; in recognition |
20 |
| of his accomplishments as poet, critic, editor, and teacher, he |
21 |
| has received the University's highest honors including being |
22 |
| named the 1989 Faculty Member of the Year, receiving the Samuel |
23 |
| Rothberg Award for Professional Excellence, and receiving the |
24 |
| 2000 Caterpillar Professor of English Award; and
|
25 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Stein has a proven ability to organize poetry |
26 |
| readings and symposia; he has directed Bradley University's |
27 |
| Visiting Writer Series since 1984; therefore, be it
|
